He described his reaction as “horror,” relief that Trump had survived, and “grief for my beautiful country.” Seth Meyers also condemned political violence on Late Night, while other late-night programs responded differently.
What did Stephen Colbert say about the shooting?
Colbert began by describing the shooting as a moment when the United States “came close to a great tragedy.” He then explained the mixture of emotions he felt as events unfolded: “My immediate reaction when I saw this on Saturday was horror at what was unfolding, relief that Donald Trump had lived and, frankly, grief for my beautiful country. And then fresh horror, as we learned that attendees had also been shot, one of whom died at the rally.” The Guardian’s July 16, 2024 report published these excerpts from his response.

“Grief for my beautiful country” was not a statement of relief alone or a claim that the incident affected only Trump. In the passage, Colbert places relief that Trump survived alongside grief over the violence and renewed horror at the harm to rally attendees. His remarks expressed distress about what the shooting meant for the country as well as concern for those directly affected.
What did Colbert mean by “a ballot, not a bullet”?
Colbert’s reflection turned from his immediate reaction to the democratic principle he believed the shooting violated. He said the purpose of democracy is to “fight out our differences with—as the saying goes—a ballot, not a bullet.” His point was that political conflict belongs in peaceful democratic debate and elections, not violence.

He also said that violence has no role in politics. The line connected his personal grief to a broader argument: people may disagree intensely, but the means of resolving those disagreements must remain nonviolent.
What did Seth Meyers say about political violence?
On Late Night, Meyers called political violence “morally wrong and a poison to democracy” and said it must be rejected in all forms. He also recalled his warning after January 6 that “multiracial, pluralistic democracy is fragile and precious” and requires vigilance, stewardship, and protection. These excerpts were reported by The Guardian.

Meyers did not present opposition to violence as a reason to stop discussing politics. TVLine’s contemporaneous coverage reported his description of politics as a nonviolent exchange of ideas and peaceful resolution of disputes, and noted that his show would continue to discuss political issues.
How did other late-night programs respond?
The immediate responses were not identical. Some hosts addressed the shooting on air; The Daily Show changed its planned schedule; and The Tonight Show did not discuss the incident in its Monday monologue. TV Insider and TVLine reported on the different choices.

| Late Night | Seth Meyers condemned political violence and spoke about protecting democracy. |
| Jimmy Kimmel Live! | Guest host Anthony Anderson urged viewers to step back from hatred and vitriol in politics. |
| The Daily Show | The program cancelled its planned Monday broadcast from Milwaukee during the Republican National Convention and returned with a New York episode on Tuesday. |
| The Tonight Show | Jimmy Fallon’s Monday monologue did not address the shooting. That programming choice does not, by itself, establish a reason for the omission. |
These accounts describe how the programs handled the immediate aftermath; they do not show that late-night television adopted one shared response.
