Landman Season 2 is at its best when Billy Bob Thornton’s Tommy Norris is dealing with the oil business and the people caught up in it. The season’s central story has enough force to carry the drama; its weaker side plots sometimes pull attention away. The change that could make Season 3 more effective is simple: let family and cultural stories deepen Tommy’s professional stakes rather than compete with them.
What is Landman Season 2 about?
Set in West Texas, Landman follows the roughnecks, executives and other people shaped by the oil boom. Paramount+ describes it as a drama about the industry and the consequences of its expansion. Season 2 continues to center on Tommy Norris, played by Billy Bob Thornton, as he navigates the business and its human costs.
The season premiered on November 16, 2025, and its ten-episode run concluded on January 18, 2026. Paramount+ lists Billy Bob Thornton, Demi Moore, Andy Garcia, Sam Elliott, Ali Larter and other returning cast members, with Taylor Sheridan and Christian Wallace as co-creators. Paramount+’s series page lists Seasons 1 and 2 and a Season 3 renewal.
What works best in Season 2?
Tommy remains the dramatic center
Thornton gives the season its strongest through-line. Tommy’s work puts him in contact with the risks, power struggles and consequences that define the show’s setting. When the story stays close to those pressures, his performance gives the drama a clear center. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus likewise identifies Thornton’s presence as a strength.

The oil-business story supplies the momentum
The show is most compelling when professional decisions have visible consequences for the people around Tommy. That focus gives the series a distinctive engine: the work is not merely backdrop, but the source of conflict and the reason characters collide. This is where the season’s premise feels most fully realized.
What holds the season back?
Not every family or secondary storyline adds weight to that central conflict. Some feel like interruptions rather than complications, leaving the season less focused than Tommy’s main arc. That judgment aligns with one review, not a universal verdict: Tom’s Guide’s finale review calls Tommy’s career a bright spot while criticizing weaker storylines that struggle to support the season. The finale may land more strongly than stretches leading up to it.

The distinction matters: a strong lead performance does not automatically make every strand of the writing work. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus also notes continuing criticism of the show’s treatment of female characters, even as it highlights Thornton. Viewers who found that balance wanting in Season 1 may not see Season 2 as a clear correction.
Is Season 2 better than Season 1?
There is no single score that settles that comparison. The useful question is whether Season 2 improves the parts of the show that matter most to you. If Tommy’s work and Thornton’s performance are the draw, the season’s strongest material remains rewarding. If you want every family and character thread to feel equally integrated, the uneven side stories may keep it from feeling like a decisive step forward.

Rotten Tomatoes’ live Season 2 page showed an 83% Tomatometer from 41 critic reviews and a 50% Popcornmeter from more than 1,000 audience ratings when accessed on October 7, 2026. Those are changeable aggregator snapshots, not a direct Season 1 comparison or a guarantee of how any viewer will respond. The difference between the scores does, however, reflect a divided reception rather than a uniformly enthusiastic one. What should Landman change for Season 3?
Give Tommy’s professional stakes first claim on the story. Family and cultural threads can add depth, but they should illuminate his choices, raise the cost of his work or complicate the oil-business plot. When a subplot does none of those things, trimming it would make the season more coherent without diminishing the show’s human dimension.

That is a critical recommendation, not a claim about the creators’ plans or an audience consensus. The aim is not to remove stories outside the workplace, but to make their connection to the central drama feel earned. The season’s strongest material suggests that the oil business already provides enough conflict to support a tightly focused story.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Landman a guide to the real oil industry?
No: it is television drama, not an authoritative account of oil production, energy policy or life in the industry. The series has drawn both praise and criticism from people discussing its portrayal of oil, and some elements—including cartel battles—are fictionalized. Axios reports that American Petroleum Institute President Mike Sommers called the show a reflection of “a pivot point of how the industry is viewed and the necessity of how it’s seen by the American people.” Rice University anthropologist Dominic Boyer described it as “part of the Joe Rogan zeitgeist” and “where men can be men, out in the oil fields.” Those perspectives help explain why the show’s cultural framing is contested; neither makes its plot a factual guide. Axios examines the debate over the show’s portrayal of the industry.
