Spoilers for the Season 1 finale, “The Crumbs of Hope.” Yes—Tommy survives. Cartel men abduct and torture him, but Gallino intervenes before they kill him. The rescue comes with a proposed business relationship, so Tommy escapes immediate danger only to face a new kind of threat.
How Tommy survives the finale
Tommy is in the hands of cartel men when Gallino steps in and has him freed. The intervention saves his life, but it is not an uncomplicated act of mercy: Gallino proposes a business relationship, linking Tommy’s future to a powerful and dangerous figure. What Monty’s death means for Tommy
Monty dies, and Tommy takes on a senior role at M-Tex. The change pushes him closer to executive power just as Gallino’s proposed arrangement adds a dangerous complication. Tommy now has to contend with the responsibilities of leading the company and the risks attached to his connection with Gallino.
What the final coyote scene means
The coyote scene closes the finale on a note of continued danger. When TV Insider asked Wallace about Tommy’s final line to the coyote, he said, “I think that speaks to just the brutality of the Permian Basin.” He described the region as hard and rough for the people who live and work there.

#1 Best Overall
Wallace did not confirm that the coyote represents one particular character. Asked whether it might stand for Monty or Tommy, he said that was “open for interpretation.” The scene can echo Tommy’s vulnerability and the difficulty of surviving in this environment, but that is an interpretation—not a definitive allegory confirmed by the co-creator.
