Sajid Ali’s Laila Majnu turns a legendary love story into a contemporary Kashmir romance whose emotional force grows alongside its lovers’ separation. Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri give that escalation real feeling, though the film’s leap from yearning to extremity can strain credibility. Its most persuasive moments make the madness feel like the cost of an all-consuming attachment; its less convincing ones ask intensity to do the work of character development.
Laila Majnu review: a modern retelling with a volatile centre
Released theatrically on 7 September 2018, Laila Majnu is a Hindi romance tragedy directed by Sajid Ali and presented by Imtiaz Ali. It relocates the classic lovers to contemporary Kashmir, where family opposition and separation shape the story. Rather than treating the old tale as a period legend, the film gives its central romance a recognizably modern setting and asks how far longing can consume a person.
That transformation supplies the film with both its promise and its risk. The romance becomes most compelling when emotion accumulates gradually, so that separation changes what the characters are able to bear. At other points, the story pushes toward emotional extremes so quickly that the shift can feel asserted rather than fully earned. The result is uneven, but not inert: its strongest passages make the intensity land, even when the whole arc does not persuade equally.
Do the performances make the obsession believable?
Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri carry the central relationship. Their performances give the romance an emotional centre, especially as the story moves beyond attraction and into the consequences of being kept apart. The film’s gradual build is an important part of that effect: when the characters’ feelings gather force through the separation, the eventual extremity has a foundation.
#1 Best Overall
The strain comes when feeling has to bridge too much narrative distance. The film wants love to become a consuming state, but not every turn feels as psychologically grounded as the premise requires. That tension is central to the viewing experience: the performances can make the emotion vivid even when the writing’s escalation asks for more than the characters’ development has supplied.
What works—and what does not
Where the film finds its force
- The contemporary relocation: Setting the legendary romance in present-day Kashmir gives the story a lived-in context for family opposition and separation, rather than simply repeating the tale as folklore.
- The gradual emotional build: The writing’s slow escalation gives the lovers’ attachment room to gather force before the story reaches its most intense register.
- The lead performances: Tiwary and Dimri make the relationship emotionally legible, helping the film’s heightened turns feel personal rather than merely theatrical.
Where the intensity falters
- Credibility under pressure: As the romance approaches obsession, some transitions feel abrupt. The film can be more convincing about the size of the characters’ feelings than about every step that takes them there.
- Emotional extremity as an answer: At times, the heightened mood risks standing in for the more gradual development that would make the characters’ choices feel inevitable.
How audiences have responded
BookMyShow displayed an 8.4/10 user rating from 29.5K+ votes on its listing when observed for this review. That is a platform-specific, changeable audience metric—not a critic score or a representative survey of all viewers. The same page includes favorable user commentary praising the gradual escalation and character credibility, which is one viewer perspective rather than evidence of a universal consensus. BookMyShow’s listing gives readers the source for that rating and vote count.

The film also returned to theatres in Srinagar in August 2024, as reported by the Kashmir Observer. That report establishes the Srinagar re-release, not the scale or commercial results of any wider run.
Verdict: should you watch Laila Majnu?
Watch it for a sincere, emotionally ambitious reworking of a legendary romance, and for two lead performances that give its longing a human centre. Go in prepared for unevenness: the film sometimes earns its heightened emotion and sometimes moves faster than its character work can support. Its best stretches make love’s madness feel painfully plausible; its weaker transitions keep it from being consistently persuasive.
