Lady Gaga has described “Abracadabra” as a return to a sound she had spent years honing. The song’s lyrics and video can be read as a theatrical confrontation with doubt and pressure, with dance as a way to keep moving—but Gaga has not publicly assigned the imagery one fixed meaning. The “lady in red” as an inner voice is an interpretation, not an official explanation.
What Lady Gaga has said about “Abracadabra”
Gaga’s own comments place the song within a creative return, not a single prescribed story. In Apple Music’s album notes for MAYHEM, she said: “I think ‘Abracadabra’ is very much my sound—something that I honed in [on] after many years, and I wanted to do it again.” She added that she had not wanted to make that kind of music for a long time, even though she still had it in her, and that she wants to learn something new with every record.
That perspective fits the album’s broader frame. In comments quoted by ELLE, Gaga said, “Mayhem is about following your own chaos into whatever cranny of your life that it takes you to.” In Vogue, she described wanting “a very free experience” and not wanting to “box myself in.” Those remarks support hearing MAYHEM as a space for range and transformation; they do not establish that every image in this particular song is autobiographical or has a one-to-one symbolic meaning.
What the lyrics and video can be read to mean
“Abracadabra” can be understood as an internal confrontation: an ominous voice or figure presents a daunting challenge, while the song’s insistent movement suggests a response—keep going, move through the fear, and do not let the challenge dictate the outcome. The lyrics’ dreamlike, theatrical images reinforce that sense of pressure without resolving into a literal plot.

- 14-time Grammy-winner, Academy Award-winner, and two-time Golden Globe-winner Lady Gaga returns with MAYHEM
Neon Music interprets the lady in red as “your internal monologue,” a threatening voice within rather than a character whose identity Gaga has confirmed. On that reading, the figure gives doubt a dramatic shape: the conflict is not simply with an outside antagonist, but with a voice that tests the self. That is a critical interpretation, not a direct statement of Gaga’s intent.
Why movement matters in this reading
The dance-floor energy offers a contrast to the challenge posed by the imagery. Instead of treating the song as a puzzle with a hidden answer, it is reasonable to hear dance and forward motion as ways of meeting uncertainty. This remains an interpretation supported by the song’s performance and imagery, not an artist-confirmed plot summary.

What “Abracadabra” means in the song
The title and chant-like syllables contribute to the song’s incantatory, theatrical atmosphere. Religious and occult imagery adds to its dreamlike intensity, but the material does not establish a literal translation, secret code, or single hidden message. The phrase works as part of the song’s dramatic sound and mood; it need not unlock a concrete narrative.

“Abracadabra” is one of the tracks on MAYHEM, Gaga’s album released on March 7, 2025. The Associated Press reported the album as a 14-track record when covering its announcement on January 27, 2025, and described chaos and transformation as themes identified in the press materials. Apple Music’s album notes characterize the record as moving across different flavors of Gaga’s career and group “Disease” and “Abracadabra” among singles revisiting her dance-floor sound.

ELLE reported that “Abracadabra” premiered with its cinematic music video during a commercial break at the 2025 Grammy Awards. Together with Gaga’s comments about returning to a sound she had honed over time, that release context helps explain the song as part of MAYHEM’s mix of renewed dance-pop energy and creative freedom—not as evidence that the video’s symbols have one official key.
