Neither wins in every theater. “Laser projection” describes a projector’s light source; IMAX is a branded presentation system that can include proprietary projection technology, screen and theater design, sound, and film-specific framing. For the best experience, compare the actual auditorium and the version of the film being shown—not just the labels on the ticket page.
Laser projection and IMAX are not competing labels for the same thing
Laser describes how a projector produces light
A laser projector uses laser illumination, but the word alone does not tell you the theater’s screen size, aspect ratio, sound system, projector configuration, or image quality. Dolby and Christie, for example, announced a Dolby Vision laser projection system using RGB pure laser illumination. Dolby characterized its Wide Color Gamut 1.0 as nearly twice the gamut of Rec. 709 and 122% of DCI-P3-capable projectors; those are Dolby’s claims about its system, not independent head-to-head measurements. Dolby’s announcement
IMAX is a broader presentation system
IMAX describes IMAX with Laser as a proprietary 4K projection system with a new optical engine. The company says it is designed for IMAX screens and promotes benefits including greater sharpness, brightness, contrast, and color. These are manufacturer-stated benefits, not independently verified comparative test results in the sources available here. IMAX with Laser
The IMAX name does not guarantee one projector setup at every location. The Associated Press notes that digital IMAX can refer to laser projection or a retrofitted screen. Check the specific theater’s description rather than assuming that every IMAX auditorium uses the same equipment. Associated Press format guide

What matters when choosing a screening
| What to compare | Why it matters | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Screen and framing | A larger screen or taller image can change the experience more than the projector label. | Screen dimensions, aspect ratio, and whether this release has expanded IMAX framing. [Associated Press; IMAX filing] |
| Projection system | “Laser” and “IMAX” do not identify the full hardware configuration on their own. | The actual system and, if disclosed, whether it uses one or two projectors. [IMAX; Associated Press] |
| Brightness, contrast, sharpness, and color | These characteristics affect how the image looks, but broad format labels do not provide venue-specific measurements. | Venue-specific details; treat manufacturer descriptions as claims, not independent comparisons. [IMAX; Dolby] |
| Sound | The room’s speakers and the film’s mix are part of the presentation. | The auditorium’s stated sound configuration and the version of the film being screened. [IMAX] |
| Seat and viewing geometry | Distance and position affect how comfortable a very large image feels. | Seat location and your preference for a close, immersive view or a more distant one. [Associated Press] |
| Film presentation | A format-specific version can matter more than a generic ranking of technologies. | Whether the film has IMAX-specific framing, is screening on 70 mm film, or has another format-specific presentation. [Associated Press; IMAX filing] |
No standardized venue-by-venue measurements of screen ratio, projector configuration, luminance, contrast, or sound are established by the cited sources. Use the theater’s listing and the film’s screening details to compare the rooms you can actually book.
When IMAX can offer something a generic laser label does not
Some films use proprietary IMAX film or IMAX-certified digital cameras, and their aspect ratio can show more image on an IMAX screen. In a 2020 filing, IMAX said certain such films could put up to 26% more image on screen. That is a company statement about qualifying films—not a claim that every IMAX movie or screening contains 26% more picture. IMAX 2020 filing

If expanded framing or the scale of an IMAX screen is your priority, confirm both that the venue offers the relevant IMAX presentation and that the film uses the framing you want. A laser-equipped auditorium can deliver a high-quality image without providing IMAX-specific framing; the projector light source alone does not determine the movie’s aspect ratio.
Why there is no universal winner
Filmmaker Christopher Nolan put it plainly in an Associated Press interview: “The two formats are sort of different and I love them both.” He also praised high-contrast laser presentations at Dolby Cinema and laser-equipped IMAX locations. That is a filmmaker’s expressed preference, not a technical test proving one format is superior.

There is no supported, independent comparison that ranks every laser auditorium against every IMAX theater. The experience depends on the specific room, the film’s presentation, and what you value most: screen scale, expanded framing, image characteristics, sound, or seating comfort.

- Check the theater’s own listing. Look for the named format, screen or auditorium details, and any disclosed projection or sound information.
- Check the film’s screening details. Confirm whether the particular show is IMAX, 70 mm, or another format-specific presentation, and whether expanded framing is identified for the title.
- Compare the actual rooms. Consider screen size and ratio, projection information, sound, and where you can sit; do not assume two venues with the same label are identical.
- Choose for your priorities. Pick a suitable IMAX screening for IMAX-specific scale or framing. If you care more about a particular contrast, sound, or seating experience, compare the competing auditorium’s stated features.
As a sense of scale—not a consumer recommendation or a measure of theater capability—IMAX Corporation and SM Cinema announced an agreement for 10 IMAX with Laser systems in the Philippines in April 2024: three new locations and seven upgrades. The announcement projected the remaining openings before the end of 2026, so it does not establish which locations are operating now. The same release reported 1,772 IMAX systems in 89 countries and territories as of March 31, 2024; that company-reported network figure was not a count of laser-equipped theaters.
