Lady Gaga opened the Australian leg of The MAYHEM Ball at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on Friday, December 5, 2025. In Rolling Stone Australia, critic Bryget Chrisfield describes a five-act, more-than-two-hour spectacle that moved between theatrical staging, new MAYHEM material and career-spanning hits.
What happened at Lady Gaga’s Melbourne show?
The night began with operatic music and a filmed sequence of Gaga writing in a journal. She then entered the show’s story world, “The Art of Personal Chaos,” within an opera-house-like set that rose several storeys. Chrisfield’s review describes a long catwalk, red LED wristbands, elaborate costumes, dancers and instrumental interludes from the band as elements of the production.
The concert unfolded across five acts and ran for more than two hours, according to Chrisfield. The Music separately described the performance as a 31-song set; that figure is The Music’s report, rather than an audited count.
The staging supported a theatrical arc, but the reviewer also emphasizes the live performance: she praises Gaga’s singing, stamina, acting and choreography, as well as the precision of the production. Chrisfield calls the show evidence of a performer at a career high point. That is the reviewer’s assessment, not an independently measured ranking.

What songs did Lady Gaga perform in Melbourne?
Chrisfield’s review highlights a mix of MAYHEM-era songs and familiar hits, alongside a ballad passage. Among the songs she singles out are “Bloody Mary,” “Garden of Eden,” “Poker Face,” “Perfect Celebrity,” “Paparazzi,” “LoveGame,” “Killah,” “Zombieboy,” “Born This Way,” “A Million Reasons,” “Shallow,” “Die with a Smile” and “Bad Romance.” This is a selection of songs discussed in the review, not a complete setlist.
Two notable setlist surprises
Chrisfield notes that Gaga performed “Summerboy” live for the first time since 2007. She also said she had worked up “Brooklyn Nights” at soundcheck before deciding to play it in Melbourne. Both moments stood out against a set that drew on different periods of her career.

How long was The MAYHEM Ball in Melbourne?
Chrisfield described the December 5 show as lasting more than two hours. The Music reported a 31-song set. These are attributed accounts from the two publications; neither figure is presented here as an independently audited measurement.
How did the show close?
In the closing passage, Gaga appeared on video without her stage makeup. Chrisfield framed the moment as a return to the person behind the stage persona: “It’s such a powerful statement of authenticity to watch Gaga revert to Stefani Germanotta before our very eyes.”

Why was the Melbourne date significant?
The December 5 performance opened the Australian leg of The MAYHEM Ball. Marvel Stadium’s announcement described the tour as supporting Gaga’s album MAYHEM and marked her return to Australia for the first time since 2014. The announcement listed Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney dates, with a second Melbourne date added after demand; those are announcement-era details, not current ticket availability.
For this specific opening night, Chrisfield’s review presents the scale of the staging and the range of the set as part of the same achievement: a carefully constructed stadium spectacle anchored by Gaga’s vocal and theatrical performance.
