La Malinche, Doña Marina, and Malintzin: What the Names Mean and When to Use Them

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

La Malinche, Doña Marina, and Malintzin are names associated with the same Indigenous interpreter who worked with Hernán Cortés, but they are not interchangeable in every context. Doña Marina is the Spanish Christian name recorded after her baptism; Malintzin is the Nahuatl-related form, commonly explained as Marina adapted to Nahuatl and combined with the respectful suffix -tzin; and La Malinche is the familiar Spanish form that developed through language contact.

Historians cannot establish with certainty what name her family gave her before the Spanish encounter. The later accusation that she was a “traitor” is a contested interpretation of her historical role, not a translation of any of these names.

The three names at a glance

Name Language or setting What it conveys Best use in writing
Doña Marina Spanish accounts after baptism The Christian name Marina with the honorific Doña When discussing Spanish records, baptism, or the Spanish naming system
Malintzin Nahuatl context A Nahuatl-related form of Marina; -tzin is described as respectful When centering Nahuatl language, Indigenous context, or the respectful suffix
La Malinche Later and familiar Spanish usage A Spanish form associated with the figure and her later cultural image When referring to the familiar historical name or the later symbol built around it
Malinalli Traditional or proposed identification Not established as her pre-Spanish name by the sources discussed here Only with an explicit qualification and a separately documented source

The forms overlap, but each places the subject in a different linguistic, historical, or interpretive frame. A careful documentary script can name the figure once and then explain why it is using one form rather than another.

What “Doña Marina” means

Marina was the Spanish Christian name

The American Historical Association account by Nancy Fitch says that the interpreter was baptized and given the Spanish name Marina. “Doña” is a Spanish honorific used as a form of respect in the historical discussion. Thus Doña Marina is not a translation of an Indigenous birth name; it is the Spanish Christian name and honorific form that appears in Spanish accounts.

Using Doña Marina can therefore signal that a passage is following Spanish documentation or focusing on the name imposed or assigned through conversion and colonial contact. It also avoids presenting a later Spanish label as if it were certainly the name she had before meeting the Spanish.

What the honorific does—and does not—prove

The title Doña indicates respect in the cited usage, but it does not by itself establish her social rank before the conquest or prove how every Indigenous community addressed her. It belongs to the Spanish naming system and should be treated as evidence of that context.

What “Malintzin” means

Marina becomes Malina, then Malintzin

The UNAM Noticonquista entry “Marina” explains the form as a Nahuatl adaptation: Marina became Malina, and the suffix -tzin was added. The American Historical Association gives the same general explanation and describes -tzin as an ending indicating respect.

That explanation makes Malintzin a Nahuatl-related form of Marina, not a word with a single, fully literal English equivalent. The respectful element matters, but translating the entire name into one English phrase would imply a precision the sources do not establish. It is better to say that -tzin carries respectful or honorific force.

Why the spelling matters

Malintzin foregrounds the Nahuatl form and the Indigenous linguistic environment in which the interpreter worked. It is especially useful when a film or article is discussing Nahuatl-speaking communities, the mechanics of interpreting, or the ways Indigenous speakers adapted Spanish names. It should not be presented as certain evidence of the name her family used at birth.

How “La Malinche” developed

A familiar Spanish form shaped by contact

La Malinche is the familiar Spanish historical form. The common explanation is that Spanish speakers adapted the sounds of Malintzin, producing the form that became widespread in Spanish writing and later public memory. This is a history of language contact, not a transparent literal translation.

Because La Malinche became the best-known label in modern Spanish and English discussion, it often appears in documentaries, school texts, novels, and political commentary. The form can be appropriate when the subject is the later cultural symbol, but it can also hide the fact that the historical record contains several names and that the original name is uncertain.

“La Malinche” is not automatically a synonym for “traitor”

In later Mexican cultural history, La Malinche became associated with a story of betrayal. That moral meaning is not contained in the name itself. UNAM Noticonquista describes the negative reputation as a later development, intensified after Mexican independence and influenced by the anonymous 1826 novel Xicoténcatl. The same overview summarizes later feminist interpretations that stress her linguistic ability, intelligence, survival, and work as a mediator.

Was Malinche Cortés’s name or hers?

Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s explanation

An important complication comes from Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s account, reproduced by UNAM Noticonquista. Bernal says that people in towns the Spanish passed through, or places that had heard of them, called Cortés “Malinche” because Doña Marina, “our interpreter,” was always with him, particularly when Indigenous leaders or ambassadors came to speak. In his explanation, the phrase referred to Cortés as the captain associated with Marina.

UNAM identifies this passage as coming from Bernal’s Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva España, published in 1632; the reproduced edition is Mexico City, Editorial Patria, 1983, page 193. Bernal also says that Juan Pérez de Arteaga was called Juan Pérez Malinche because he learned languages with Marina and Jerónimo de Aguilar.

How to qualify the account

Bernal’s explanation shows that Malinche could refer to a man associated with Marina, especially Cortés. It does not prove that every community used the term identically, nor does it settle the full history of the word. In a documentary, say that Bernal reports this usage rather than presenting it as an unquestionable rule for all Indigenous speakers.

Is Malinalli her real birth name?

What the evidence allows you to say

No. The sources discussed here do not establish Malinalli as her definitive pre-Spanish name. Nancy Fitch’s American Historical Association resource states: “In the first place, historians cannot establish with any real certainty what her name might have been before she encountered the Spanish.”

Malinalli may appear in traditional accounts or modern explanations as a proposed Indigenous name, but that claim requires a separately identified source and careful qualification. It should not be silently converted into a fact. The safest wording is that her pre-Spanish birth name is unknown or cannot be established with certainty from the available evidence.

Why the uncertainty matters

Names assigned, translated, or recorded after conquest can obscure a person’s earlier identity. Acknowledging the gap prevents a documentary from turning a plausible reconstruction into a biographical certainty and keeps the focus on what the sources actually record.

If your passage is about… Use primarily… Reason
Spanish baptism, colonial Spanish records, or Spanish honorifics Doña Marina It is the Spanish Christian name recorded in those contexts
Nahuatl language, Indigenous mediation, or the suffix -tzin Malintzin It foregrounds the Nahuatl-related form and respectful element
The familiar historical label or later Mexican cultural memory La Malinche It is the established later Spanish form
Her unknown childhood identity “Her pre-Spanish name is not known with certainty” The evidence does not justify a definitive personal name
Bernal’s account of how communities addressed Cortés Malinche for Cortés, with attribution Bernal explicitly reports that usage

A practical opening for a script or article

A precise introduction can read: “The Indigenous interpreter commonly called La Malinche appears in Spanish sources as Doña Marina and in Nahuatl contexts as Malintzin; historians cannot establish with certainty what name she bore before the Spanish encounter.” This sentence identifies the referent, distinguishes the linguistic forms, and states the central uncertainty without claiming a literal translation.

Rules for captions, narration, and subtitles

  • Introduce the variants together before switching among them.
  • Do not label Malinalli as her certain birth name.
  • When discussing the suffix -tzin, call it respectful or honorific rather than assigning one exact English word to the whole name.
  • If “Malinche” refers to Cortés, identify that usage as Bernal Díaz del Castillo’s reported explanation.
  • Use “traitor” only as a description of a later, contested reputation, not as a definition.

How her reputation changed

From valued interpreter to alleged betrayer

Contemporary conquest narratives valued Marina’s ability to interpret between languages and political communities. Later Mexican nationalist narratives recast her as a symbol of betrayal. UNAM Noticonquista identifies the anonymous 1826 novel Xicoténcatl as an early influence on that negative story.

Why historians resist a simple verdict

The “traitor” narrative treats a complex colonial encounter as if one individual’s motives could be read directly from the outcome. The UNAM overview cautions against treating that familiar story as a transparent record of her intentions. Later feminist scholarship instead highlights linguistic expertise, intelligence, survival, and mediation. These interpretations are not interchangeable, and none changes the linguistic meaning of Malintzin or the Spanish origin of Doña Marina.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling Malinalli a proven birth name. The pre-Spanish name is not established with certainty.
  • Giving “Malintzin” a one-word English translation. The sources explain the respectful suffix, not a definitive literal translation of the complete name.
  • Assuming Malinche always meant the woman. Bernal reports that communities called Cortés Malinche because of his association with Marina.
  • Presenting “traitor” as the name’s meaning. That is a later and contested interpretation.
  • Using one form without context. Readers may not know whether a passage follows Spanish records, Nahuatl usage, or later cultural memory.

Further reading for historical context

For the naming questions, consult Nancy Fitch’s American Historical Association resource “Who Was Malinche?” dated May 1, 2004, and the UNAM Noticonquista entries “Marina,” “Bernal explica porqué nombran a Cortés Malinche,” and Sandra Messinger Cypess’s “Malintzin/Doña Marina/La Malinche.” UNAM’s bibliography also lists Camilla Townsend’s Malintzin’s Choices: An Indian Woman in the Conquest of Mexico (University of New Mexico Press, 2006) for a broader historical study.
