KPop Demon Hunters is the Netflix movie behind the K-pop-meets-monster-hunting premise: an animated musical about chart-topping performers who secretly protect their fans from demons. It premiered on June 20, 2025, so it is a hit to stream now—not a new release. Its bright action, big emotions, and original songs make the “pure fun” verdict easy to understand.
What is KPop Demon Hunters about?
Rumi, Mira, and Zoey are K-pop superstars onstage and demon hunters offstage. While performing for devoted fans, they also defend them from supernatural threats. Their rivals, the Saja Boys, are a boy band whose members are demons. Netflix made the animated musical with Sony Pictures Animation; Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans directed it. Netflix lists the runtime as 1:39:53.
The premise gives the movie a natural engine for spectacle: concert performance, pop stardom, and supernatural action all belong in the same story. The contrast between the trio’s public image and their secret work also leaves room for an emotional arc, rather than making the film a sequence of music and fights alone.
Why it’s so much fun
The songs are part of the storytelling, not just a backdrop. The soundtrack includes “Golden” and “Takedown,” among the tracks BGR reviewer Andy Meek singled out when he called the film a blast. Meek also praised its colorful animation, action, and emotional story. Those are a reviewer’s judgments, not a measured consensus—but they point to the combination that makes the movie click: spectacle with character stakes and memorable pop hooks.

Music producer Ian Eisendrath described the creative opportunity in Netflix’s January 12, 2026 soundtrack guide: “I’ve always thought of K-pop as the most theatrical genre of pop, and so I was just instantly excited by the possibilities of what could happen in a narrative context with the K-pop songs [and] incorporating actual, hit-making K-pop artists.” The musical approach extends beyond the central songs: Jeongyeon, Jihyo, and Chaeyoung of TWICE perform a special version of “Takedown” in the end credits, according to BGR.
How big has the movie become?
Netflix’s June 2026 one-year update reported more than 600 million views since the film’s June 20, 2025 debut. In countries where Netflix publishes Top 10 lists, the company said the movie reached the Top 10 in 93 countries and No. 1 in 76. Netflix also cited Nielsen year-end data showing 20.5 billion U.S. viewing minutes during 2025. These are differently scoped measures: the views and country rankings are Netflix figures, while the U.S. minutes figure is attributed to Nielsen.

The success also travelled beyond home viewing. Netflix reported that a limited sing-along theatrical event drew more than 1,300 sold-out screenings across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. That is a count for that specific event, not the film’s total theatrical screenings.
Is there an official soundtrack edition?
Yes. Netflix’s June 17, 2026 merchandise guide describes an anniversary soundtrack edition on vinyl and CD, with four additional tracks and possible inserts such as stickers and collectible photo cards. The edition is a natural collectible for viewers who want to revisit the songs; it is not necessary to enjoy the film. Retail stock, seller, price, and exact edition availability can vary, so check those details with a retailer before ordering.
