KPop Demon Hunters was built as more than an animated story with pop songs attached: co-directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans shaped the music around the characters and plot, while the casting separated speaking performances from original-song vocals. Its reach can be seen across Netflix viewing, music charts and streams, and a theatrical sing-along event—but those measures show the scale of the phenomenon, not a single reason it happened.
Who made KPop Demon Hunters?
Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans co-directed KPop Demon Hunters. Sony Pictures Animation credits Michelle Wong as producer and lists a voice ensemble that includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong and Byung Hun Lee. The studio’s official film page provides the production credits.
The film places a contemporary idol group in a world that also draws on Korean cultural and mythological references. The Associated Press reported that Kang’s team researched K-pop fandom and idol culture, and quoted her describing a goal of representing “the fandom and the idols in a very specific way.” AP also noted a 1990s group H.O.T. reference in “Soda Pop.” Kang has described wanting demons and Jeoseung Saja—grim reaper figures—to feel both traditional and modernized. These are choices within one fictional work, not a claim that the film represents Korean culture as a whole.
Who are the voices in KPop Demon Hunters?
The speaking cast and the singers credited on the original songs are distinct groups of performers. That division reflects the film’s production roles; it is not a mistake or a mismatch in the credits.

- KPop Demon Hunters, a Netflix film from Sony Pictures Animation, follows K-pop superstars Rumi, Mira and Zoey
Speaking performers
Sony Pictures Animation lists Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Joel Kim Booster, Liza Koshy, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong and Byung Hun Lee among the voice cast.
Original-song performers
The original songs feature singers including EJAE, AUDREY NUNA, REI AMI, Andrew Choi, Danny Chung, Kevin Woo, samUIL Lee, Neckwav and Lea Salonga. The speaking credit identifies the performer voicing a character in dialogue; the singing credit identifies the performer on a song. Depending on the role, those credits can belong to different people.

Why are the singing and speaking voices different?
The team cast for the demands of each role rather than assuming that one performer had to handle both dialogue and songs. In a July 10, 2025 Reddit AMA, executive music producer and music supervisor Ian Eisendrath described a long voice-casting process. He said the challenge was finding K-pop singers who fit the characters, were bilingual and each had a distinct vibe. That approach let the filmmakers consider character fit and musical performance as related but separate needs.
A song choice could also precede an actor’s casting. Netflix’s cast explainer reports Kang saying “Love Maybe” was already in the film’s cut before Ahn Hyo-seop was cast. The example shows that the musical material was being placed in story context, rather than simply selected to echo an actor’s earlier work.

What did the directors say about the soundtrack?
Kang and Appelhans treated songs as scenes that had to move the story forward. Netflix’s account of “Golden” describes several jobs for the number: introduce the HUNTR/X members’ struggles, reveal that Rumi is a half-demon demon hunter, and make a difficult high note part of the plot’s dramatic problem. The song’s climax matters because of what it means for Rumi, not only because it is a vocal showcase.
Storytelling and pop craft worked together
The music was developed collaboratively across locations. Danny Chung, a THEBLACKLABEL A&R and lyricist, told Netflix that he had weekly meetings with Kang, Appelhans and producer Michelle Wong, alongside collaborators working across Korea, New York, Los Angeles and Bangkok. He described the directors as protecting the storytelling function while songwriters and producers pursued chart-ready K-pop; Netflix reports that the collaboration took years.

Chung characterized the project as unfamiliar territory: “K-pop hasn’t been applied to this [movie-musical] type of thing in this type of way, at this type of level.” The point is not that pop appeal and narrative purpose had to compete, but that the team worked to make them serve the same songs.

The reported milestones span different kinds of attention. Netflix viewing, music streams, chart positions and a limited theatrical event are not interchangeable measures, and none by itself establishes why audiences responded.

| Measure | Reported result | What it describes |
|---|---|---|
| Film viewing | Netflix said on March 12, 2026, that the film had received more than 500 million views since its June 2025 debut. | Netflix’s film-view metric as reported in its sequel announcement. |
| Soundtrack listening | Netflix reports more than 10 billion global soundtrack streams; the reporting page does not establish a precise publication date for that figure. | Music listening, not film viewing. |
| Chart performance | The Associated Press reported that the soundtrack debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Soundtracks chart and No. 8 on the Billboard 200, later peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. AP also reported that eight songs reached the Billboard Hot 100. | Chart positions and song placements reported by AP in 2025. |
| Sing-along screenings | TheWrap reported that a two-day theatrical event grossed $19.2 million. | Revenue from a limited event, not a general theatrical run. |
Netflix also described the soundtrack as the first soundtrack to have four songs simultaneously in the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10. That is Netflix’s account of the chart milestone. These snapshots document reach across platforms and settings; they should not be combined into one total or treated as proof that one creative choice caused the film’s popularity.
What did the directors make of the fan response?
After the sing-along screenings, TheWrap spoke with Kang and Appelhans about seeing fans gather around the fictional groups. Kang called the screenings eye-opening. Appelhans recalled Rei Ami and Kevin Woo performing as their characters while children gathered around the bus, an experience he described as real and “very meta.” The moment captures how the film’s concert world could connect with an audience beyond the screen; it does not mean the directors had predicted that response.
Is there going to be a KPop Demon Hunters sequel?
Yes. Netflix announced on March 12, 2026, that Kang and Appelhans would return to direct a sequel. The announcement described it as the first project in an exclusive multiyear writing and directing partnership with Netflix across animation. Both directors said they wanted to explore more of the world and its characters. Kang said, “I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters.”
