Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans say KPop Demon Hunters was personal enough that they were determined to make it, even if the work proved overwhelming. In a Collider interview, the writer-directors connect that resolve to representation, family, music and a bold creative challenge: building a new mythology around pop songs, comedy, action and dance.
The interview was published in a syndicated copy crediting Collider and dated October 6, 2025. Its central question is not simply how the directors made an animated musical, but why this particular story mattered so much to them.
Why the story felt too personal to abandon
Maggie Kang’s connection to the characters
Kang described the film as something she was making for both her younger self and the person she is now. That personal investment was part of the project from the outset: her original idea came packaged with her as its writer and director. She recalled the team’s determination in plain terms: “We are going to do it even if it kills us.”
Chris Appelhans saw his own family in it
Appelhans recognized the female characters Kang wanted to create, and he connected the film’s Korean American family themes to his own life. He put the emotional parallel this way: “I felt like when the movie came out, Maggie was talking about, ‘I’m making this movie for 12-year-old Maggie,’ and I felt like a lot of the time, I was making the movie for 12-year-old Maurene.”

He also recalled his son’s response after seeing the movie and noticing the enthusiasm around it: “Then I think he saw the movie, he saw how cool everyone thought it was, and so he came running down the driveway, ‘Appa!’” The anecdote captures how the film’s public excitement intersected with a private family connection.
What made the film an unusual creative challenge
Inventing mythology rather than adapting an origin story
Kang said that making a non-origin superhero story was especially difficult because the team had to introduce new lore, mythology and culture while also giving audiences a compelling narrative. She described the challenge as testing how far the storytelling could go, rather than relying on an established world.

Making music part of the storytelling
Appelhans wanted music to be essential to the film, not merely a soundtrack layered over the action. The directors aimed to integrate pop music into the story in a way that felt fresh. That ambition meant coordinating songs with character, comedy, movement and plot.
Choreographing action, dance and comedy together
Kang credited Sony Pictures Imageworks with helping solve sequences that combined dance-fighting, choreography, comedy and music-driven action. One example Appelhans discussed was a brief passage between a climactic song and a character’s sacrifice. The team experimented with 150 pieces of a track separated into stems to shape that moment. It was a specific production anecdote, not a claim that every animated sequence is built through the same process.

What the directors said about a possible sequel
Kang said the priority would be finding a story they genuinely wanted to see. Appelhans added that a new chapter should not simply reuse the first film’s satisfying 90-minute feature structure; for him, that constraint could become a creative opportunity. Their comments describe how they would approach a sequel, not a confirmed plot or release date.

The October 6, 2025 syndicated interview copy attributed 236 million views and 393.3 million hours watched to Netflix at that reporting moment. Those are historical figures, not current totals. Netflix later announced on October 21, 2025 that the film had more than 325 million global views over 91 days. The same announcement reported 8.3 billion soundtrack streams worldwide as of that date; streams are not album sales.
