Short answer: Kodi 19.0 “Matrix” was a genuine final release on February 19, 2021—not a beta or release candidate. But it is no longer a current release. Kodi’s Matrix development ended with Kodi 19.5 on December 25, 2022, so in 2026 most users should install a newer supported Kodi version. Choose Matrix only when a specific older device, add-on, skin, or test environment requires it.
If you do need Matrix, download it from Kodi’s official download page or its official release mirrors. Do not use a random APK site or a “fully loaded Kodi” installer.
Was Kodi 19.0 really a final release?
Yes. Team Kodi released Kodi 19.0 “Matrix” on February 19, 2021, following its alpha, beta, and release-candidate testing stages. The release was intended for Kodi’s supported platforms, although distribution was not simultaneous everywhere. Store approval and platform-specific packaging could delay availability; the initial Windows Store build for Xbox, for example, was delayed.
That historical fact matters because many older headlines still say “download Kodi 19.0 now.” The headline was reasonable at launch, but it is misleading today. Kodi’s official download information says development of the v19 Matrix line has ended. The final Matrix-series release was Kodi 19.5, released on December 25, 2022.

Current recommendation: install the current supported Kodi release unless you have a specific Matrix compatibility requirement. If Matrix is required, use 19.5 rather than the original 19.0 build.
The biggest change: Python 2 became Python 3
Kodi 19’s most important change was not a new menu or visualisation. It was the migration of Python-based add-ons from Python 2.7 to Python 3. Python 2 had reached end-of-life, so Kodi needed to move forward, but the transition created a genuine compatibility break.
Kodi itself may install normally while parts of an established setup stop working. Potentially affected components include:

- scrapers and repository dependencies;
- third-party skins;
- older wizards and maintenance tools; and
- abandoned repositories that were never ported to Python 3.
Compatibility is determined by each add-on developer. There is no safe promise that every Kodi 18 add-on will work on Kodi 19, and a working media library does not prove that the surrounding add-on ecosystem is compatible.
Kodi published additional guidance after launch because users reported broken add-ons after upgrading. Before moving from Kodi 18, make a list of the add-ons and skins you actually need, then check the developer or repository’s compatibility information. Do not defeat compatibility warnings by editing metadata unless you fully understand the security and stability risks.
What Kodi 19 added for ordinary users
Playback, HDR, and media handling
- AV1 software decoding was added.
- Windows 10 received support for HLG HDR and static HDR10 playback, subject to suitable hardware and drivers.
- Android gained static HDR10 and dynamic Dolby Vision support on compatible devices.
- Additional OpenGL bicubic scalers were introduced.
- Music-library handling improved, including metadata, album information, release dates, durations, and multi-disc sets.
- A Matrix-themed audio visualisation and improved music-video links connected artists, albums, and videos more effectively.
These are platform- and hardware-dependent capabilities. Kodi support alone does not guarantee HDR or Dolby Vision output. The device chipset, operating system, firmware, graphics driver, HDMI chain, television settings, and the video file’s format and metadata all matter.
Interface and subtitles
Kodi 19 redesigned parts of the music experience with refreshed music screens, metadata displays, playlist views, a new “now playing” view, and updated GUI controls and artwork handling.

Subtitle controls also became more flexible. Matrix added fixed timestamp overlays, dark-gray subtitle text, and adjustable subtitle opacity—useful improvements for viewers who find bright white subtitles distracting.
Live television and PVR
Personal video recorder features gained reminders, home-screen widgets, improved channel and group management, better numbering and sorting, and additional navigation and context-menu improvements. These changes matter most to users who use Kodi as a live-TV front end rather than only as a local-media player.
Gaming and Apple-platform changes
Matrix added integer scaling for pixel-art games and broader Bluetooth controller support on iOS, including Xbox and PlayStation controllers where the platform supports them. Kodi 19 also added tvOS support while dropping 32-bit iOS support.
Apple installation and distribution restrictions differ substantially from Windows and Android. There is no single universal sideloading procedure that applies to every iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV setup.

Kodi 19 strengthened add-on-origin enforcement, improved warnings for broken or deprecated add-ons, and added stronger protections around binary add-on data exchange. It also introduced a default password requirement for Kodi’s web interface and provided more information about the risks of enabling external interfaces.
Keep Kodi’s web-control interfaces on your local network unless you understand authentication, router configuration, port forwarding, and secure remote access. Exposing a control interface directly to the public internet can create an avoidable security risk, even when the application has improved its defaults.
Where to download Kodi safely
Start at the official Kodi download page. It provides platform selections for Windows, Linux, Android, Raspberry Pi, macOS, iOS, and tvOS, and links to older releases where appropriate.

For Matrix specifically, use Kodi’s official old-release mirrors. Older builds remain downloadable for compatibility and archival purposes, but “downloadable” does not mean “actively maintained” or “recommended for normal use.”

Before downloading, check:
- the operating system and device model;
- the CPU architecture, such as ARM or x86;
- the required installer or package format; and
- whether the file comes from kodi.tv or Kodi’s official mirror infrastructure.
Avoid “fully loaded Kodi” packages, modified APKs, and installers that bundle repositories, codecs, VPNs, or promises of free premium channels. They may contain unwanted software, insecure add-ons, modified binaries, privacy risks, or unlicensed content sources.
Kodi is media-center software, not a streaming subscription. The official application contains no films, television channels, or other media. Add-ons may connect to separate services or media sources, but those sources are not the Kodi application itself. Kodi does not endorse pirated content that would otherwise require payment.
Should you install Kodi 19.0, 19.5, or something newer?

Kodi 19.5 is the final point release in the Matrix branch. It included later fixes and backports while remaining within the same major version, but it is not current merely because it remains available on a mirror.
Prepare before upgrading
- Record your current version. This helps identify the upgrade path and makes troubleshooting easier.
- List essential add-ons and skins. Treat rarely used add-ons as optional, but verify anything your household depends on.
- Confirm Python 3 compatibility. Check the official developer or repository page for each essential component.
- Back up Kodi userdata. Include databases, sources, profiles, thumbnails, settings, repositories, and skin configuration.
- Export or separately back up the library if its metadata and watched status are important.
- Save custom repository and skin details. Do not assume every third-party repository will still be available.
- Check free storage and make sure the device can complete the installation.
- Test first on a spare device or separate installation if the system is critical or used by nontechnical household members.
Typical userdata locations include:

~/Library/Application Support/Kodi/
These are examples, not universal guarantees. Android versions and device manufacturers can restrict access to application folders or use different package paths. Verify the location for your device before deleting or replacing anything.
Platform-specific installation cautions
Windows
- Open the official Kodi download page and select Windows.
- Choose the installer architecture that matches the computer.
- Back up userdata before running the installer.
- Install over the existing application only after confirming that add-ons and skins are compatible.
- Restart Kodi and check the library, essential add-ons, display output, and remote controls.
The standalone Windows installer, Windows Store distribution, and Xbox deployment are not interchangeable in every respect.
Android and Android TV
Use Google Play when Kodi and the device are supported there. Otherwise use the official Kodi download or mirror infrastructure and select the correct APK architecture. Android installations may require an unknown-source permission, and Android TV devices can add their own launcher, storage, and manufacturer-specific restrictions.

For Matrix, store availability may be inconsistent. Kodi later explained that Google Play target-API requirements affected distribution of Kodi 19.5: Matrix targeted API level 29 while Google required newer target levels at that time. A file remaining on Kodi’s servers does not guarantee that every app store will offer it.
Before uninstalling an existing Kodi package to resolve a signature or installation problem, back up userdata. Uninstalling can remove application data.
Linux
Package availability depends on the Linux distribution. A distribution repository package may not match the version on Kodi’s official mirrors. Use the package mechanism supported by your distribution unless you specifically need an official binary or a specialised build.
Kodi 19 moved Linux toward a single binary covering X11, Wayland, and GBM environments, but distribution packaging, graphics drivers, and hardware acceleration remain separate concerns.
Raspberry Pi and dedicated distributions
Installing Kodi as an application is different from installing LibreELEC, OSMC, CoreELEC, or another operating-system image containing Kodi. The image provider controls its own release schedule, device support, boot process, userdata location, and rollback procedure. Follow that project’s documented upgrade method rather than treating it like a Windows installer.
Apple platforms
tvOS support arrived with Kodi 19, while 32-bit iOS support was dropped. Availability, signing, and installation restrictions vary by Apple device and software version, so use the platform-specific instructions associated with the official Kodi distribution rather than applying an Android or Windows procedure.

The original 19.0 announcement noted that the Windows Store build for Xbox was delayed and could take additional time or appear in a later point release. Xbox users should check the Microsoft Store and Kodi’s current platform guidance rather than assuming the standalone Windows installer applies.

Common problems after moving from Kodi 18
Add-ons disappear or refuse to install
Python 2-only code, incompatible repository metadata, missing dependencies, abandoned repositories, and older Kodi API requirements are common causes.
- Check the add-on developer’s official page or trusted repository.
- Update Kodi’s official repository metadata.
- Remove and reinstall only from a trusted source.
- Restore the backup if the add-on is essential and no compatible version exists.
A repository claiming to bypass Kodi’s compatibility checks is not automatically trustworthy.
The skin breaks
Switch temporarily to Kodi’s default skin. Then install a Matrix-compatible version of the preferred skin if one exists. Skin API changes and missing dependencies can cause blank screens, broken menus, or unusable controls.
The library appears to be missing
Do not immediately rescan everything. First confirm that Kodi is using the expected userdata directory and profile. A clean installation, a different user profile, permissions changes, or a failed database migration can make an existing library appear absent.
Restore the backed-up database and sources if necessary. Re-add media sources only when the original database cannot be recovered.
HDR or Dolby Vision does not work
Verify the device chipset, operating-system support, firmware, HDMI path, television input mode, file format, metadata, Kodi video settings, and graphics drivers. The Matrix release notes describe platform-specific support, not universal HDR or Dolby Vision output on every Android box, GPU, television, or file.
An Android APK will not install
Check the architecture, Android version, package signature, unknown-source permission, available storage, and whether an existing Kodi installation must be removed first. Back up userdata before uninstalling anything.

Verdict
Kodi 19.0 “Matrix” was a substantial and genuinely final release when it launched on February 19, 2021. Its Python 3 migration also made it a real breaking upgrade, especially for users relying on old add-ons and skins.
In 2026, however, Kodi 19.0 should not be presented as the normal download choice. Install a newer supported Kodi release unless Matrix is required. If you must remain on the Matrix branch, obtain Kodi 19.5—not 19.0—from Kodi’s official mirrors, back up userdata first, and expect legacy add-on compatibility issues.
