The original KissAnime is no longer available. KissAnime.ru and KissManga shut down permanently on August 14–15, 2020, so there was no verified official KissAnime service operating in 2021. Current websites using the KissAnime name should be treated as unrelated mirrors or clones, not as an authenticated continuation. For legal anime streaming, check licensed services such as Crunchyroll and HIDIVE by title and country.
What KissAnime was
KissAnime was a formerly prominent free anime-streaming website used by viewers looking for English-subtitled and dubbed releases. It was popular because it offered a broad catalog, free access, episode comments, and titles that could be difficult to find through licensed services in some regions.
Rather than functioning like a conventional licensed distributor, the site generally embedded or linked to video files hosted through third-party sources. Contemporary coverage widely described KissAnime as an unauthorized anime-streaming service. Claims that it was definitively the “largest” anime site should be understood as estimates rather than audited first-party figures. Contemporaneous reporting by TorrentFreak documented its prominence and eventual closure.
Did KissAnime operate in 2021?
No. The original service had already gone offline in August 2020. A page titled “KissAnime – Watch Anime Online English Subtitles – 2021” may refer to the former service, repeat older information, or use “2021” as a search-oriented keyword. It should not be taken as proof that the original KissAnime operated during 2021. One page carrying that exact title was published later while discussing events supposedly occurring in 2021, which makes its chronology unreliable.

There is no reliable evidence in the reviewed sources that the original operators relaunched KissAnime after the shutdown.
Why did KissAnime shut down?
In August 2020, KissAnime displayed a notice saying that copyright owners had taken down its files. KissAnime and KissManga were then reported as permanently closed. The available contemporaneous evidence supports the conclusion that copyright-holder pressure and enforcement led to the shutdown.
It does not, however, establish one specific lawsuit, Japanese law, studio, or court judgment as the sole cause. The more accurate description is that the services closed after copyright owners removed or pursued access to the files on which the sites depended. Are current KissAnime websites official?
A website using “KissAnime,” “KissAnime TV,” “KissAnime ru,” “KissAnime Watch,” or words such as “new” and “reborn” is not automatically connected to the former service. After the original closure, search results and directory pages listed numerous domains claiming to be official or presenting themselves as replacements. Those listings do not verify ownership, licensing, or continuity.
The practical rule is simple: the original KissAnime closed, and a later domain using the name should not be trusted merely because it has familiar branding. Do not use clone URLs as a substitute for verification, and do not assume that a site’s logo, archive, or “official” label proves a relationship with the former operators. Examples of third-party listings showing the confusion include this directory page and its listings for other KissAnime-branded domains.
Are KissAnime mirrors safe?
Not every clone can be declared malicious without a current, domain-specific security analysis. The problem is that unknown operators, inconsistent availability, aggressive advertising, and unverified hosting make the risk difficult to assess. Common hazards on unofficial streaming pages include:
- Pop-ups, redirects, and deceptive play buttons.
- Fake browser-update, codec, or video-player prompts.
- Phishing pages and browser-notification abuse.
- Malicious advertising or drive-by downloads.
- Unwanted extensions, apps, or APK files.
- Credential theft when a reused password is entered.
- Unclear privacy, billing, and data-retention practices.
An ad blocker may reduce some nuisance advertising, but it does not verify a site’s licensing, operator, privacy practices, or downloads.

- Close the page and do not install anything it offered.
- Remove browser notifications and extensions you did not intentionally add.
- Run a reputable security scan on the device.
- Change any password entered on the site, especially if it was reused elsewhere.
- Review payment and account activity if financial details were submitted.
- Delete downloaded players, codecs, browser extensions, and APKs obtained from the page.
Is watching from a KissAnime clone legal?
Copyright rules differ by country, and legality can depend on the specific source, conduct, and act involved. Unauthorized uploading, hosting, linking, or distributing copyrighted anime creates clear legal risk. Whether merely streaming a particular unauthorized source exposes an individual viewer to liability depends on local law and the facts.

The safest recommendation is to use licensed services and avoid unauthorized streams. It is too broad to say that every viewer’s conduct is criminal everywhere, just as it is inaccurate to treat a clone as legitimate because it is accessible without a subscription.

Crunchyroll: the closest mainstream substitute
Crunchyroll is the strongest general-purpose option for former KissAnime viewers who want a large anime-focused catalog, subtitles, dubbed releases, and current programming through a recognizable licensed distributor. It does not carry every anime, and subtitle, dub, simulcast, and movie availability can differ by country.
In the United States, a February 2026 pricing announcement listed these monthly prices: Fan at $9.99, Mega Fan at $13.99, and Ultimate Fan at $17.99. Crunchyroll also offers the Crunchyroll Channel, a free, ad-supported 24/7 channel on selected platforms. It is not the same as unlimited on-demand access to Crunchyroll’s full Premium catalog. The listed supported platforms include selected Roku, LG Smart TV, Vizio Smart TV, and Amazon Freevee devices.

HIDIVE: a smaller, complementary catalog
HIDIVE can be useful when a particular title, exclusive, or English dub is not available on a viewer’s primary service. Its U.S. help page lists pricing of $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year.
HIDIVE offers a seven-day first-time free trial. The trial automatically converts to a paid membership unless it is canceled under the applicable terms, so record the renewal date when signing up. Availability is not worldwide: HIDIVE’s own support material explains that the service has withdrawn from some countries. Confirm that it operates in your location before relying on it. Free legal viewing usually means one of three things: a curated linear channel, an ad-supported catalog, or a limited-time promotion. Official distributor and publisher channels on YouTube may also carry selected episodes or series. Libraries and digital-borrowing services can provide anime in some regions.

A title may rotate out, be limited to a particular country, require advertisements, or be available only through a scheduled channel. Check the exact series, subtitle language, and territory rather than assuming that a service’s entire catalog is free.

What changed after 2021?
Some older KissAnime-alternative articles are now misleading because they recommend Funimation as a current standalone service. Sony completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll from AT&T on August 9, 2021, after which the services moved toward consolidation. The Funimation website and app ended service on April 2, 2024, with users directed toward Crunchyroll. The closure is documented in Crunchyroll’s service notice; the acquisition was announced by Sony Pictures.
Consequently, a 2021 list that presents Funimation as an active separate alternative is outdated for a 2026 reader.
How to choose a legal anime service
- Search for the exact title first. Catalog rights change and no service has every anime.
- Confirm your country. A listing in the United States may not apply in India, the United Kingdom, or elsewhere.
- Check subtitles and dubs. The desired English track may not be available for every season or title.
- Compare the total price. Include taxes, monthly versus annual billing, and any renewal price.
- Read trial terms. Note whether a free trial automatically becomes paid.
- Verify device support. Check browser, mobile, smart-TV, console, and streaming-device compatibility.
- Check offline viewing separately. Downloads are plan-specific and are not universal across services.
- Prefer transparent accounts and support. Clear billing, cancellation, privacy, and customer-service policies are important advantages over anonymous streaming domains.
Bottom line
The original KissAnime did not survive into 2021: it closed permanently in August 2020 after copyright-holder action against the files supporting the service. Later domains using the name are not verified continuations and carry legal, privacy, and security uncertainty. For legitimate viewing, start with Crunchyroll, consider HIDIVE for specific catalog gaps, and use official free or ad-supported options when their limited, regional selection meets your needs.
