What happened to Kingdom Hearts: Missing-Link?
Missing-Link was announced in April 2022 as a GPS-based action RPG for iOS and Android. After a closed prototype test in January 2023 and other closed beta testing, it remained unreleased. Square Enix’s timeline for a 2024 launch changed first to an unspecified date, then to cancellation.
- April 2022: Square Enix announced the mobile game.
- January 2023: A closed prototype test took place. Square Enix later referred to multiple closed beta tests, though the cancellation announcement did not list their dates or results.
- November 2024: Square Enix postponed the planned 2024 release without announcing a replacement date.
- May 14, 2025: Square Enix announced that development was canceled before the game entered service.
The cancellation statement and timeline are reproduced in Gematsu’s May 14, 2025 report. Contemporary coverage of the delay likewise reported no revised release timing; it did not establish a specific cause. Read the November 2024 delay report.
Why was Missing-Link delayed?
Square Enix did not give a detailed reason for the November 2024 delay in the announcement reported at the time. It said the planned release was moving to an unannounced date, but the available coverage does not establish whether the delay was caused by technical problems, GPS performance, beta-test feedback, or another factor.

In May 2025, Square Enix gave a broader explanation for the project’s eventual cancellation. That later statement is relevant to the outcome, but it should not be treated as the stated cause of the earlier delay.
Why did Square Enix cancel the game?
The Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Development Team said it had worked on developing and adjusting the game, but concluded it would be difficult to offer a service players would find satisfactory over a long period. The team’s statement, reproduced by Gematsu, said: “Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by lots of players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.”

That is Square Enix’s stated rationale—not evidence of a particular technical failure, poor test scores, unprofitability, or a specific business strategy. The announcement did not publish the test feedback or other evidence behind the decision. The specific technical, financial, organizational, and operational factors remain unestablished in the cited statements.

Square Enix’s confirmed status is cancellation, not a continuing delay: Missing-Link was canceled before launch, and no revival has been announced in the franchise update dated June 10, 2026. That update covered Kingdom Hearts Collection [I–III] and Kingdom Hearts IV; it is available on Square Enix’s official franchise page. A future reversal cannot be ruled out, but there is no confirmed release plan to report.

In the cancellation announcement, the development team also said the Kingdom Hearts series would continue, adding that it was working on Kingdom Hearts IV. That referred to the franchise and its next numbered game, not to Missing-Link continuing development.
