Kinds of Kindness delivers on its wonderfully WTF promise, but its oddness is less playful than punishing. Yorgos Lanthimos and co-writer Efthimis Filippou build three separate stories around control, obedience and the hunger for acceptance. Their recurring cast and shared concerns create echoes, not one continuous plot. The result is sharp, deliberately abrasive dark comedy: a fit for viewers who enjoy being unsettled, and a tough sell for anyone seeking the visual exuberance or emotional accessibility of Poor Things.
What is Kinds of Kindness about?
It is a triptych: three independent story engines, linked by recurring performers and themes rather than a causal plot. The first follows a man trying to reclaim agency from a controlling employer. In the second, a police officer grows suspicious when his wife returns after going missing at sea. The third follows a woman searching for someone with a special ability who is destined to become a spiritual leader. These premises set up escalating, surreal situations without turning the film into a conventional anthology with tidy lessons.
Across the stories, people bargain with their own judgment to keep a relationship, regain power or earn a place in a group. That focus makes the episodes feel related even as their characters and circumstances change. The same acting company reappears in different roles, a formal choice that can make the themes resonate—or keep the viewer at a deliberate distance.
Is it connected to Poor Things?
Not as a sequel or shared-story world. The useful connection is creative: Emma Stone described Kinds of Kindness as a return to the style of Lanthimos’s earlier collaborations with Filippou, saying it was “the chance to finally be in that version of Yorgos’ mind” in an Associated Press interview published May 20, 2024 (Associated Press).

That shift is apparent in the viewing experience. Where Poor Things centers on one protagonist’s arc and leans into visual extravagance, Kinds of Kindness is comparatively restrained in its staging and divided among three stories. Its comedy is colder, and it offers less of a conventional emotional handhold. A viewer who enjoyed Lanthimos’s eccentricity in Poor Things may still find this film a more alienating proposition.
Is it funny, or just cruel?
Both responses are built into the film’s method. The humor is deadpan and caustic: the absurdity often comes from watching characters treat an extreme demand as ordinary, or press on with a social ritual after it has become alarming. The laughter can feel like recognition of the joke, discomfort at the situation, or both.

Rotten Tomatoes’ current critics’ consensus calls the film “a cold-hearted triptych brimming with caustic wit” and “bitingly funny” (Rotten Tomatoes). Individual responses on the same page diverge: some describe it as eerie and unpredictable, while others object to confusion or slow pacing (Rotten Tomatoes reviews). That split captures the central risk: strangeness is the point, but intention does not guarantee that every episode will feel compelling rather than exhausting.
What holds the three stories together?
Power and dependence
The first story makes control explicit through a workplace relationship in which one man’s choices are sharply constrained. Its absurd escalation turns dependence into the subject, not merely a setup for a gag: how much autonomy can someone surrender while still telling himself he is choosing?

Suspicion and identity
The second story shifts the question into intimacy. A wife’s return after disappearing at sea should resolve an absence; instead, her husband’s suspicion destabilizes the relationship. The episode uses uncertainty about identity to unsettle the security people expect from closeness.
Belonging and authority
The third story turns toward a community organized around spiritual authority. The search for a person with a special ability makes belonging feel conditional, bound to a belief about who is worthy to lead. Together, the stories return to the same uneasy bargain: acceptance and control can demand more than a person should give.

How do the performances and structure work?
The recurring ensemble—including Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Mamoudou Athie, Joe Alwyn and Hunter Schafer—takes on different roles across the stories. The changes invite comparison without asking the audience to track a single cast of characters through a shared plot. For some viewers, that repetition sharpens the sense that the film is examining patterns of power; for others, it can make the three segments feel like variations that never quite accumulate into a larger emotional payoff.
Plemons won the Best Actor award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival for his performance in the film, as reported by the Associated Press and Disney (Associated Press; The Walt Disney Company). That recognition is a useful marker of the ensemble’s acting focus, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond equally to the film’s emotional reserve.

Who is likely to enjoy it—and who may not?
- Likely to enjoy it: viewers drawn to Lanthimos and Filippou’s surreal social fables, deadpan acting, unsettling power dynamics and stories that refuse to resolve into conventional comfort.
- May find it testing: viewers who want one continuous plot, more warmth, clear explanations for bizarre events, or less cruelty and repetition. The film runs nearly three hours, so its deliberately segmented approach asks for sustained patience.
Stone also recalled the cast’s expectations with dry humor, saying the film “was free and happy and everyone’s going to love this.” That was her wry account of the mood during production, not a promise about how audiences would receive the finished film.
