King Charles’s return to public-facing royal duties was announced on 26 April 2024. His later update, on 12 December 2025, was that his cancer-treatment schedule could be reduced in the New Year—not that treatment had ended. The Palace described the next phase as precautionary, with his condition to be monitored.

King Charles’s cancer and return to public duties: the timeline

Date What happened What was made public
5 February 2024 Buckingham Palace announced the diagnosis. Diagnostic tests had identified a form of cancer after “a separate issue of concern was noted” during a procedure for benign prostate enlargement. The Palace did not name the cancer type. It said the King had begun regular treatment and would postpone public-facing duties, while continuing state business and official paperwork. Buckingham Palace’s statement
26 April 2024 The Royal Family announced that the King would soon resume public-facing duties. His first planned external engagement was a joint visit with Queen Camilla to a cancer treatment centre. The Royal Family’s return announcement
12 December 2025 The King shared an update in a message supporting Stand Up To Cancer. He said his treatment schedule could be reduced in the New Year. The Palace described the treatment as moving to a precautionary phase, with monitoring continuing. The King’s message and AP’s report
May 2026 The Royal Family reported a visit to Guy’s Cancer Centre. The King met patients receiving cancer treatment. This documents a cancer-related public engagement, not a new personal medical update. The Royal Family’s report

What did the King say about his treatment?

In his 12 December 2025 message, Charles said his treatment schedule could be reduced in the New Year. He credited early diagnosis, effective intervention and following doctors’ orders. He also said, “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives.” This was an update about a planned change to the schedule, not an announcement that treatment was over or that he was cured.

The King used the message to encourage people to take up available cancer screening. He said that “at least nine million people in our country are not up to date with the cancer screenings available to them.” He also cited figures about bowel cancer survival and lifetime cancer diagnoses. These are figures as stated in his message, with the screening reference framed around the UK; they should not be read as an independent assessment here. Read the full message.

Has King Charles revealed what type of cancer he has?

No cancer type is identified in the cited Palace announcements, the King’s December 2025 message or AP’s report. The Palace said diagnostic tests found a form of cancer after a separate concern was noted during a procedure for benign prostate enlargement. That sequence does not establish that the cancer was prostate cancer; the Palace has not publicly named it in these sources.

Likewise, the public statements do not specify his treatment regimen, prognosis or remission status. The Palace’s description of a precautionary phase and continued monitoring is not a declaration of remission or a cure.

How to understand the return and later engagements

The 2024 return announcement, 2025 treatment update and 2026 cancer-centre visit describe different events. The return announcement concerned resuming public-facing duties after treatment and recuperation. The later message concerned the expected pace of treatment. The 2026 visit shows continued public engagement connected to cancer care; it does not, by itself, update the King’s personal medical condition.
