Its performances, oppressive atmosphere and sound design give the series force, but its sustained brutality and bleakness can make the experience exhausting. This is horror with a heavy content burden, not an easy binge.
What is Khauf about?
Madhu (Monika Panwar) leaves Gwalior for Delhi after a traumatic experience, hoping to begin again near her boyfriend and in a new job. She moves into room 333 at the Pragati Working Woman Hostel, where the room’s frightening history has already affected the women around her. A hostile environment and an apparent demonic presence deepen Madhu’s vulnerability.
Elsewhere, a healer’s actions create another pocket of horror. Dr. Shohini (Shilpa Shukla), Madhu’s employer and a psychiatrist, initially understands the women’s bond through shared trauma rather than supernatural forces. The strands eventually connect back to the hostel. That structure lets the series move among social thriller, psychological horror and possession without treating the haunting as an explanation for every harm.
Does the blend of human and supernatural horror work?
The strongest idea in Khauf is that the supernatural threat sits alongside human cruelty, not above it. Abuse and misogyny are part of the series’ horror; the demon does not make the women’s other dangers less real. The result is a grim story about vulnerability, solidarity and violence, with the hostel serving as more than a spooky setting.

- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
That breadth also puts pressure on the storytelling. The possession narrative runs for roughly five hours, and the Scroll.in review argues that its length strains plausibility and raises questions about some characters’ decisions. The Hollywood Reporter India review likewise sees the series moving between social thriller, psychological horror and supernatural possession, while noting that the storytelling becomes uneven in later episodes. The mixture is thematically apt, but it does not always produce a coherent or convincing progression.
What are the performances and craft like?
Panwar is the anchor. As Madhu changes physically and emotionally, her performance gives the transformation a human point of reference rather than reducing it to horror spectacle. Rajat Kapoor brings an unsettling quality to his role, adding tension without needing to dominate the screen.

Director Pankaj Kumar’s lighting and camerawork help make the hostel feel oppressive, while Alokananda Dasgupta’s music steadily builds suspense. These choices give the series a strong atmosphere even when its plot asks more of the viewer’s patience than its character logic can always support.
How dark and graphic is it?
Very. The series includes strong violence and bloodshed, with characters attacking people while under demonic possession, according to the BBFC classification record. Its story also deals with sexual assault, abuse, stalking, black magic, human sacrifice and female infanticide. These are central, disturbing elements rather than brief background references.

The unrelenting violence and misogyny are part of the series’ intended bleakness, but they can also make it emotionally draining. Viewers seeking suspense without sustained brutality, or who want to avoid sexual-violence themes, should take that intensity seriously before starting.

Who is Khauf for?
It is best suited to viewers who want horror that connects supernatural possession with social violence, and who can tolerate an unusually bleak, violent watch. Panwar’s performance and the series’ audiovisual atmosphere are meaningful strengths. Its persistent brutality, strained stretches of logic and uneven later storytelling are real drawbacks, not minor qualifications to an otherwise light scare.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed an 88% Tomatometer score from eight critic reviews when its series page was consulted on October 8, 2026. That is a changeable snapshot, not a substitute for the range of critical responses: Scroll.in emphasizes the series’ exhausting intensity and logical strain, while The Hollywood Reporter India notes uneven storytelling later on.
