King Charles’ “Hot Equerry” Jonny Thompson: What Changed—and What’s Reported Now

The “hot equerry” nickname refers to Jonny Thompson. The 2024 role-shift coverage and his reported 2026 departure are distinct stories, and the reports do not prove online attention caused either change.

The “hot equerry” headline refers to Lieutenant Colonel Jonny Thompson, whose reported change in public-facing duties became news in 2024 after online attention to his appearance. That connection was part of media coverage, not a confirmed explanation from the Palace. In September 2026, separate reports said Thompson planned to leave his senior equerry role at the end of the year and leave the Army for private-sector work. Those reports do not establish that online attention caused his departure.

What the “hot equerry” story is about

“Hot equerry” is a media and social-media nickname, not an official royal title. Thompson is a British Army officer who served in the Royal Household. The 2024 Independent report framed his reported move out of public view as a response to online frenzy over his appearance. That framing should be attributed to the outlet: the available reports do not establish an official Palace explanation or prove that the attention caused a change in his duties.

The story has since acquired a separate development. Sky News and The Independent reported on September 1, 2026, that Thompson was expected to leave his senior equerry role at the end of that year. They also reported that he planned to leave the Army and move into private-sector work. These were future plans when published, not confirmation that either departure had already taken place.

Thompson’s reported career timeline

  • 2019: He joined the Royal Household as equerry to the then Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, according to September 2026 reporting.
  • September 2022: After Charles became King, Thompson became equerry to Charles, according to Sky News.
  • 2024: Sky News reported that Thompson became senior equerry to the King and Queen. That same year, The Independent published the report linking a reported move out of public view to online attention.
  • September 1, 2026: Sky News and The Independent reported that he planned to leave the Royal Household at the end of 2026 and leave the Army for private-sector work.

The 2026 reports describe seven years in the Royal Household and more than 20 years in the Army. Those are reported career details, not evidence about why he chose to leave.

What changed: reported role shift versus planned departure

Coverage What it reported What it does not establish
2024, The Independent A reported move out of public view, framed as connected to online attention to Thompson’s appearance. That the Palace confirmed the reason or that the online frenzy caused the change.
September 2026, Sky News and The Independent A plan to leave the senior equerry role at the end of 2026, alongside a plan to leave the Army and pursue private-sector work. That the departure was completed, or that the online attention caused it.

The distinction matters: a reported shift in public visibility is not the same as leaving the Royal Household. The 2026 coverage reported a planned departure from the role and the Army; it did not establish a connection between that plan and the 2024 online frenzy.

What the Palace response says

Royal Central reported that a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said: “Their Majesties were of course aware of this plan in advance and I know they are most grateful to Jonny for his support over the past seven years and wish him all the best for the future.” The statement is available here through Royal Central’s attribution; the sources reviewed do not include a Palace release carrying the quote directly.

How to read the newer reports

Sky News and The Independent published their departure reports on September 1, 2026, with the end of 2026 as the expected timing. Their reporting supports describing Thompson’s departure as planned at that point, not as completed. The Royal Household’s Court Circular is its official record of engagements, but the June 2026 equerry handover shown on the located page concerns the Princess Royal’s appointment, not Thompson’s career plans.
