King Charles III and Queen Camilla led the Royal Procession on Royal Ascot’s opening day, June 16, 2026. They rode in the first carriage with the Duke and Duchess of Wellington, placing the King and Queen at the front of the meeting’s best-known ceremonial arrival.
Who was in the first carriage at Royal Ascot?
At The Races’ video description identifies Charles and Camilla in the first carriage, alongside the Duke and Duchess of Wellington. The report concerns the opening day of the 2026 meeting; it is distinct from the Royal Household’s account of how the procession generally works.
Their place at the head of the procession also continued a recent pattern: the Associated Press reported that Charles and Camilla led the traditional carriage procession on opening day in 2025.
What is the Royal Ascot procession?
The Royal Family describes the procession as the start of each day at Royal Ascot. The King, Queen and accompanying royals arrive along the racecourse in horse-drawn landaus, then watch the races from the Royal Enclosure. The arrival is both a practical entrance to the day and a public ceremony linking the royal party to the races.

When did the 2026 procession take place?
Royal Ascot ran from June 16 to 20 in 2026. The published schedule listed the Royal Procession at 2 p.m. The same schedule placed the Gold Cup on June 18. Those times and dates describe the 2026 meeting, not a future edition.
Why does the royal connection matter?
Ascot was founded by Queen Anne in 1711, and the Royal Household says the summer meeting became a Royal week in 1911. The procession makes that connection visible, bringing the royal party along the track before the day’s racing begins.
