Amazon says Story So Far is available in the U.S. on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app; neither feature works for every title.
Recaps and Story So Far solve different reading problems
Think of Recaps as a “Previously on…” segment before you begin the next installment. They highlight plot points and characters from the preceding book in an eligible series. Story So Far is for a different moment: it refreshes you on the book you have already started, stopping at your latest reading position rather than summarizing the whole story.
| Feature | What it covers | Best time to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Recaps | The last book read in a supported series | Before starting the next installment, after finishing the book being recapped |
| Story So Far | The current book up to your reading position | When returning to an unfinished book |
| Ask this Book | Answers questions about the current book | When looking up story context; it is separate from Recaps and Story So Far |
Amazon’s July 2, 2026 update describes Story So Far as available in the U.S. across thousands of popular fiction titles on Kindle devices and the Kindle iOS app. Amazon does not publish a complete public catalog of supported titles. Amazon’s feature overview explains the current offering.
What “AI-powered” means—and what it does not establish
Amazon’s consumer announcement focuses on the reader benefit. Amazon confirmed to TechCrunch that Recaps are generated using technology that includes generative AI and are checked with help from Amazon moderators. The available descriptions do not establish that every recap is generated live, that a particular AI platform powers the feature, or that each recap is individually written by an editor. TechCrunch’s report covers Amazon’s confirmation.

Amazon describes Recaps as being created by Amazon with technology and moderators; moderation is intended to help with accuracy, not a guarantee that every detail is flawless. Treat a recap as a memory aid, not a replacement for the book or a definitive source for close analysis. Summaries can omit secondary characters, simplify timelines, or misread an ambiguous event.
How to find a recap
The control appears only when the title or series is eligible. Amazon documents these routes:
Rank #2
- Light and compact - With adjustable brightness, high contrast ratio, and fast page turns.
- Effortless reading in any light - Read comfortably with a 6“ glare-free display, adjustable front light—now 25% brighter at max setting—and dark mode.

On a Kindle e-reader
- Open your Kindle Library and locate the series grouping.
- Open the grouping’s three-dot menu.
- Select View Recaps. For some supported individual books, the option is labeled Read recap.
In the Kindle iOS app
- Open the Kindle Library and locate the series grouping.
- Press and hold the grouping.
- Select View Recaps.
On Amazon.com
- Open the relevant series page in a web browser.
- Look for View Recaps and select it if shown. The option is available on selected series pages, not every Amazon page.
To open Story So Far
For a supported book, press and hold it in the Kindle Library and look for Read recap. While reading, open the book’s three-dot menu and choose the recap option if it appears. Amazon’s instructions for the feature describe these routes. Menu names can vary by feature and context.
Who can use the features?
Amazon’s current documentation specifies U.S. availability. Recaps are aimed at eligible best-selling English-language Kindle books in series; Story So Far is described for thousands of popular fiction titles. Availability is title-dependent: owning a compatible Kindle does not mean every book in your library will have a recap button. The cited documentation does not verify broader international availability.

- Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
- Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
- Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
- Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.
Eligible books may be purchased or borrowed, including some Kindle Unlimited and Prime Reading titles. Borrowing a book does not make it automatically eligible; the individual title must be supported. Amazon’s Kindle Scribe user guide also describes recap access and books borrowed through Kindle programs.
If no option appears, check the title’s series grouping in your Kindle Library, then try the Kindle iOS app or the relevant series page on Amazon.com. A missing control may mean the title is not supported; geography, interface, or account/device availability may also matter. Amazon has not provided a complete public title list in the cited materials.

Use the right mode to avoid spoilers
Amazon positions Story So Far as spoiler-free up to the reader’s stopping point, making it the better choice when resuming an unfinished book. Standard Recaps cover an earlier installment and can reveal major developments in that book. Use one only after finishing the volume it recaps. Do not assume every recap is spoiler-proof or that the standard series recap stops at your personal reading progress.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Accuracy, author control, and tricky series
Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing help page says Recaps are always enabled for eligible books: authors cannot opt in or out, write their own version, or edit the recap. Amazon creates them, and authors who find an error are directed to contact Amazon. That means authors cannot ensure that a recap follows their preferred terminology, interpretation, or spoiler boundary. See Amazon’s KDP Recaps help page.

A brief refresher may also be less useful when a series has non-linear plots, several timelines, companion novels, interconnected standalones, omnibus editions, or a reading order that differs from publication order. A series label does not necessarily mean the recap accounts for every reader’s preferred order. For continuity questions or disputed details, consult the original text.
Story So Far is designed to reflect your current reading position. As a practical precaution, make sure the device or app you use has the right progress before opening it, particularly if you read across multiple devices; the cited Amazon material does not specify how every reading context handles synchronization.
Who is most likely to find it useful?
These refreshers are especially handy for readers juggling long-running fantasy, mystery, or thriller series, and for anyone returning to an installment after a long break. Story So Far addresses the separate problem of forgetting what happened before pausing halfway through a book. If you mainly read print, audiobooks, or e-books outside Amazon, the features offer less practical value. For readers already in the Kindle ecosystem, they can make it easier to resume without searching through earlier chapters.
