The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner listed Porter’s date of birth as December 15, 1970, making her 47 when she died. An autopsy was performed the following day, November 16, but the cause of death was initially deferred while the investigation continued.
Kim Porter’s official cause of death
On January 25, 2019, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner announced that Porter’s cause of death was lobar pneumonia. The manner of death was certified as natural. The official case number was 2018-08709.
Lobar pneumonia is a form of pneumonia that affects a substantial section of a lung. The medical examiner’s announcement established the cause and manner of death; it did not provide a basis for claims about a particular pathogen, medication, toxicology result, or the length of Porter’s illness. Those details should not be added without an authoritative record documenting them.

Porter was born in Columbus, Georgia, and maintained a strong connection to the city. She and Combs had three children together: Christian Casey Combs and twins Jessie James Combs and D’Lila Star Combs. Her son Quincy Brown, whose father is singer Al B. Sure!, was also raised within the family structure that included Combs, who was widely described as a parental figure in Quincy’s life.
At the time of Porter’s death, a representative for Combs confirmed the news and asked for privacy for the family. Contemporary reports commonly described Porter as Combs’s former partner and the mother of three of his children.
Porter and Sean Combs were more than simply “ex-girlfriend” and “boyfriend”
Porter and Combs had a long-term, on-and-off relationship. The shorthand “Combs’s ex-girlfriend” describes their status at the time of her death, but it leaves out the more complicated history they shared as partners, friends, and co-parents.
In a 2007 interview with Essence, Porter discussed ending the romantic relationship while explaining that she and Combs remained connected through their children and friendship. Porter’s funeral and burial in Georgia
Porter’s funeral was held on November 24, 2018, in Columbus, Georgia. Local reports identified Cascade Hills Church as the venue and Evergreen Memorial Gardens Cemetery as the burial site.
Hundreds of mourners—and, according to some local estimates, more than 1,000 people—gathered for the service and burial. Attendance figures varied by report, so the precise number should be treated as an estimate. The turnout reflected Porter’s ties to her hometown as well as the public attention surrounding her family.
What was “Kim’s Lost Words”?
In September and October 2024, a 59-page book titled Kim’s Lost Words: A Journey for Justice, From the Other Side… appeared online. It was marketed as a memoir based on Porter’s diary or private writings.

Porter’s children publicly disputed that description. Quincy Brown, Christian Combs, Jessie Combs, and D’Lila Combs issued a joint statement saying that their mother had not written the book and describing the claims associated with it as fabricated or false. Their objection was specifically relevant to the book’s claimed connection to Porter and should not be treated as proof of every allegation made by third parties about how the book was produced.
Associated Press reporting said the family emphasized that Porter’s cause of death had already been established and that the official finding contained no indication of foul play. Amazon later said it had been made aware of a dispute involving the title and removed the book from its store.
The careful conclusion is therefore limited but clear: the family disputed the book’s authenticity, and Amazon removed it after learning of the dispute. The book should not be presented as an authentic Kim Porter memoir, diary, eyewitness account, or authoritative source about her death.
