For Kim Petras, makeup is part of how she tells her story. In a May 2024 interview with Allure, the singer described beauty as creative expression tied to songwriting, identity, and the changing visual worlds she builds around her music.
How makeup shaped Petras’s sense of identity
Petras recalled that makeup affirmed how she felt inside as a child and teenager. Later, wearing it became a way to let people know who she is. She described that experience personally, rather than as a universal promise about what makeup can do: “[Makeup] affirmed how I felt on the inside when I was a child and a teenager.”
Her early memories include watching her mother use MAC eye shadow. Petras said she became interested in lipstick, and she also recalled carrying MAC Fix+ setting spray. Those details trace makeup from a family memory into a familiar part of her own routine.
Why she connects makeup with music
Petras links makeup to the same storytelling impulse that informs her songs. “Makeup and my songs and music are so intertwined with each other. I get to tell my story [with makeup],” she told Allure. In her account, beauty is not separate from the music: it helps give her creative ideas a visible form.

She also described makeup as integral to the way she works: “Without makeup, I wouldn’t be able to do my job at all the way that I want to.” The statement is about her own practice and performance identity, not a claim that makeup is necessary for other artists.
How her makeup changes with each creative era
Petras’s looks shift with the characters and visual concepts she creates around different releases. For Turn Off the Light, she described a corpse-like look. For Slut Pop Miami, she pointed to thin brows, a spray tan, and different contour. These examples show how details such as brow shape, complexion, and contour can help distinguish one artistic era from another in her work.

MAC Viva Glam and the campaign’s purpose
Petras starred in MAC’s Viva Glam campaign and spoke about its lipstick in terms of its charitable purpose: “100 percent of [proceeds from] the lipstick go toward change in the world.” Allure reported in its May 29, 2024 interview that Viva Glam had raised more than half a billion dollars for charity, HIV research, and LGBTQ+ communities. That figure is the amount reported at the time of the interview; it should not be read as a current total.
