Ellis denied Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner’s request to seal portions of their 2023 settlement with Ray J on March 30, 2026. The judge found their evidence of harm too vague and unsupported to justify sealing the material, while allowing a bank account number to remain partially redacted. The ruling concerns public access to court documents—not whether anyone breached the settlement or whether the parties’ separate allegations are true.
Why the judge denied the sealing request
In a ruling reported by Rolling Stone on April 1, 2026, Judge Ellis said the parties’ showing was “too vague, speculative, amorphous, and unsupported to support the requested sealing order.” The court therefore rejected the request to keep portions of the settlement from public view.

The ruling did not release every detail without restriction: Rolling Stone reported that the judge permitted a partial redaction of a bank account number. The decision was about whether the requested material should be sealed, not about the underlying claims.
What the settlement says about confidentiality
The 2023 agreement involved Ray J, Sonja Norwood, Kim Kardashian, Kris Jenner and Kardashian Jenner Productions. Its confidentiality provision covers the agreement’s existence, negotiations, terms, settlement amount and payment facts. But it also lists exceptions, including disclosure required by court order and disclosures connected to actions to enforce the agreement. The court-order exception is relevant to the sealing dispute: confidentiality language does not itself guarantee that a court will seal a document.

The agreement also says that signing it is not an admission of wrongdoing. It states: “This Agreement reflects the settlement of claims and contentions which are denied and contested and by entering into this Agreement no Party admits or acknowledges that they committed any wrongdoing.”
What is known about the reported $6 million amount
TMZ reported that Ray J claimed the agreement involved $6 million and alleged Kardashian and Jenner breached it by discussing the tape. TMZ also reported that the Kardashian family had not confirmed the amount. The figure is Ray J’s reported claim, not an amount established by the sealing ruling or confirmed by the family in that report.

How the sealing case differs from the parties’ other claims
In the related dispute, Kardashian and Jenner alleged defamation over Ray J’s public statements about a federal racketeering investigation. The Associated Press described those points as allegations in their complaint, not findings of fact. The AP’s account concerns that separate dispute.
Likewise, Kardashian denied Ray J’s account in a sworn declaration quoted by Rolling Stone: “His claim that I had a plan with my mother and others to release a sex tape, defraud the public, and file a ‘fake’ lawsuit against the porn company that released it ‘to create buzz’ is a lie.” That is Kardashian’s denial, not a conclusion by Judge Ellis. The sealing decision did not decide whether either side breached the agreement, whether Ray J’s statements were defamatory, or whether the underlying allegations were true.
