Some Kick creators said they were leaving or weighing whether to leave after CEO Ed Craven appeared to react with laughing emotes during a 2023 livestream involving a sex worker. Others said they could not afford to walk away. TechCrunch’s September 29, 2023 report described individual creators’ decisions and concerns; it did not establish a platform-wide departure count.
What happened on the Kick stream?
TechCrunch reported that Paul Denino, the streamer known as Ice Poseidon, broadcast an encounter in Brisbane on September 21, 2023. According to the report, Denino and fellow streamer Sam Pepper were concealed in an adjacent bedroom while another participant, identified as Andy, paid a sex worker $500 and asked for consent to film.
When the encounter became physical, Denino and Pepper made noises behind the door, startling her. After receiving a text telling her that people were in the other room, she tried to leave. TechCrunch reported that Andy stopped her and referred to having paid her. The account raises a distinction between consent to a paid encounter or filming and awareness that other people were present. The report did not include an interview with the woman, and these details should be understood as TechCrunch’s account, not findings from an independent investigation.
TechCrunch said Denino disputed claims that a hidden camera was involved and alleged the interaction was legal. The report noted that sex work was legal in Brisbane in licensed brothels or when a sex worker was working privately and alone; it did not resolve the legal status of every act shown in this particular stream.

Why were Kick streamers considering leaving?
For some creators, the issue was whether Kick’s response showed that it took the safety and dignity of sex workers seriously. Rachel, who streams as TheFoodieWaifu, told TechCrunch, “It sucks to see a platform stand behind someone who clearly doesn’t respect sex workers or their safety.” She said she had decided to leave, despite the opportunities Kick had offered her as a smaller creator. BobDuckNWeave also announced a departure, calling the incident “just sickening,” according to the report.
These were individual reactions, not evidence of a mass exodus. TechCrunch’s reporting does not establish how many creators left, and the accounts it published show why the choice was not straightforward for everyone.

What did Kick’s CEO say?
TechCrunch reported that Craven posted laughing emotes in the stream’s chat while the encounter unfolded. His reported reaction became a central point of criticism because creators were judging not only the stream itself but also how Kick’s leadership responded to it.
Kick’s public post said community and public safety “cannot be compromised” in content creation. It also said the company was “continuously learning” where the balance sits and making changes daily, and promised further updates to its guidelines and enforcement measures. TechCrunch reported that Kick did not respond to its request for comment. Separately, the company told 404 Media that it continually reviewed and refined policies, but might not disclose specific details for privacy and confidentiality reasons. As quoted by TechCrunch from that statement to 404 Media, Kick said: “We aim to maintain a fair and consistent approach to content moderation while respecting the privacy of our users and employees.”

Did Kick ban Ice Poseidon?
No—not at the point covered by TechCrunch’s September 29, 2023 report. The outlet said Kick removed Denino from its front page and featured category, but had not banned him then. That describes the status reported at that time, not his current account status.
Why didn’t some streamers leave?
Leaving a platform can mean losing income, contracts, or a place to work, and an alternative may not feel safe or viable. Bree told TechCrunch she could not return to Twitch because of harassment she had experienced there and described streaming as her livelihood. Kelly, known as MrsViolence, said Kick income helped pay rent and buy groceries. Although she was distressed by the incident, she said she continued making content where she could earn money.

Kelly’s figures, as reported by TechCrunch in 2023, show the financial pressure she described. They are her account, not audited platform-wide data:
| Context | Kelly’s reported monthly income |
|---|---|
| Twitch, when she had more than 700 paying subscribers | A little over $1,000, reaching up to $1,200 in a good month |
| Twitch, after revenue-split changes | About $400 |
| Twitch, after she stopped prioritizing the channel | Around $120 |
| Kick, with 145 subscribers | More than $1,000 |
TechCrunch also described Twitch’s then-default Partner subscription split as 50/50 and some premium or grandfathered arrangements as 70/30. Those were 2023 terms, not a statement of current Twitch rates. Together, the interviews illustrate the trade-off creators described: a platform decision shaped by values and safety could also affect whether they could pay their bills or find an acceptable alternative.

What does Kick’s policy say now?
Kick’s currently published Community Guidelines are dated March 19, 2026. They provide a current point of comparison, not evidence of what rules were in force or how they were enforced in September 2023.
The guidelines say moderation considers creator intent, involvement, reaction, outcome, external influences, and channel history. They assign creators responsibility for content streamed on their channels, address age-restricted suggestive content involving consenting adults, and prohibit pornography and sexual extortion. They also prohibit public-safety pranks designed to incite fear, as well as conduct that harasses or exploits unwilling participants or vulnerable people. Users can report content through the report button, and possible enforcement ranges from warnings and restrictions to suspensions and permanent bans.
Those standards suggest useful questions for assessing any platform response: what was streamed, what the channel owner and participants intended or did, what risks and effects followed, whether anyone unwilling or vulnerable was exploited, how viewers could report it, and what enforcement resulted. The published 2026 wording does not establish whether those rules applied to the 2023 incident or whether they were applied consistently in that case.
