Costner took a job in his family’s construction business while he was trying to find his way into acting. The Los Angeles Times account gives the key detail: he disliked the position from the start and left after 30 days. It does not identify a specific construction trade, job title, or employer, so those details should not be inferred.
How did he turn toward acting?
A college audition changed his direction
At California State University-Fullerton, Costner had chosen marketing as his major. During his senior year, he noticed a casting-call announcement in the college newspaper while struggling to stay awake in accounting class. He auditioned for a campus production but did not get the part. The experience nevertheless made him want to be on the acting side of the audition door; he began taking acting classes and auditioning regularly, according to the Los Angeles Times profile.
Graduation and the career change
A Washington Post profile published August 14, 1987, says Costner graduated in 1978 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and left his career about a month later to pursue acting. The construction job fits into that early transition, rather than suggesting that he rejected every form of regular work.

He took other jobs while pursuing film work
Costner’s early path was not a single leap from construction straight to leading roles. A CNN transcript from August 16, 2003, says he had considered a corporate job in college and, after marrying Cindy Silva, headed to Hollywood. His early work there included stage management and truck driving, alongside efforts to establish himself as an actor.
In the 1987 Washington Post profile, Costner explained what drew him to acting: “But I was never able to find any kind of work where I could take it home with me and dream about it and think about it like acting.” That reflection describes his broader motivation; it is not presented as a comment specifically about the construction job.
