Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show was a career-scale victory lap—with a complication at its center: he performed “Not Like Us” while Drake’s defamation suit against Universal Music Group over the song’s promotion was still pending. The performance reached a reported television audience of 133.5 million, but its largest spectacle was also tied to an unresolved dispute.
What Kendrick Lamar performed at Super Bowl LIX
Lamar headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. SZA joined him as a guest, and DJ Mustard was also part of the set. The Associated Press reported this ten-song setlist:
- “Squabble Up”
- “HUMBLE.”
- “DNA.”
- “euphoria”
- “Man at the Garden”
- “Peekaboo”
- “luther” (with SZA)
- “All the Stars” (with SZA)
- “Not Like Us”
- “TV Off”
The AP noted that half of the ten songs came from GNX. That recent-album emphasis gave the show the shape of a major career moment, rather than a set built only around older hits.
Why “Not Like Us” made the win complicated
“Not Like Us,” the centerpiece of Lamar’s feud with Drake, was also the performance’s most legally charged choice. At the time of the Super Bowl, Drake had sued Universal Music Group, alleging that the label promoted the song despite its disputed claims. Those are allegations by the plaintiff, not findings that the song’s lyrics were true. The Associated Press reported that Lamar omitted the disputed word during the halftime performance.

How large was the audience?
Guinness World Records lists 133.5 million television viewers for Lamar’s halftime show as the largest TV audience for a Super Bowl halftime performance. The NFL also reports 133.5 million. This is a reported television-audience figure, not a direct count establishing exactly how many individual people watched.

How to read the performance’s “victory”
Calling the show a victory lap is an interpretation, not an objective description. The scale of Lamar’s headlining platform, the reported audience, his collaborators and a set that drew heavily on GNX support that reading. But the inclusion of “Not Like Us” also kept the Drake–Lamar conflict in view, turning a celebration of Lamar’s recent work into a moment shadowed by litigation.
Contemporary reviews offered broader cultural and political readings of the staging. TIME framed the performance as a shift in the rules of the Super Bowl halftime show, while the Los Angeles Times examined the decision to bring “Not Like Us” to the event. Those are critics’ interpretations, not proof that all viewers understood the references in the same way.
