Kendrick Lamar headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. The NFL reported an average audience of 133.5 million viewers and called it the most-watched halftime show at the time. “Broke the internet” captures the scale of attention around the performance; it is not evidence of an actual internet outage.

Lamar headlined the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX halftime show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. SZA joined him as a featured performer. The NFL hosts the official full-show video—a way to watch the performance, rather than evidence of a physical release.

Before the game, Lamar described rap as “still the most impactful genre to date” and said he would be there “to remind the world why.” That was his view, as quoted in the NFL announcement, not an independently measured ranking of musical genres.
How many people watched?
The NFL reported that the halftime show averaged 133.5 million viewers and described it as a record audience in its 2025 report, which carried Associated Press reporting. That figure and record description belong to the 2025 report; the available reporting here does not establish whether a later show has surpassed it, so it should not be presented as a verified current all-time record.

Why did people say it “broke the internet”?
The phrase is figurative shorthand for the show’s unusually broad attention in news and promotional conversation. Contemporaneous coverage described the performance as having “predictably broke[n] the internet,” but the cited reporting does not document a technical outage. In other words, the phrase describes a cultural moment, not a failure of internet infrastructure.
There is also a separate use of similar language that can cause confusion: an Apple Marcom case study used “broke the internet” for a Kendrick Lamar and Timothée Chalamet campaign video. That campaign is distinct from the Super Bowl halftime performance.

What do the campaign numbers measure?
Apple Marcom’s 2026 case study reported the following results for the campaign. These are campaign-reported figures, not independent audience measurements of the halftime show itself.
| Campaign figure | What the case study reported |
|---|---|
| Global views | 3.65 billion |
| Mentions | 5.7 million |
| Apple Music halftime show impressions | 810 million |
| Bespoke playlists | 55 |
The campaign case study describes a mix of reach, mentions, platform impressions and playlist activity. Those measures indicate substantial promotional attention, but they are not interchangeable with the NFL’s average-viewer figure.
Why was the performance a major career moment?
NPR Music previewed the performance as a significant moment for Lamar. Sidney Madden said, “This is one of the most important shows of his career and it’s happening at a time where he’s never been hotter.” NPR’s February 7, 2025 preview also described Lamar as the first solo rapper to headline the halftime show, noted his five Grammy wins at that point, and identified SZA as a guest and frequent collaborator. Those are contemporaneous details from the preview, not claims about later career milestones.
