Black Doves is a six-episode Netflix spy thriller set in London at Christmas, with Keira Knightley as a politician’s wife who secretly sells state secrets. Its murders and espionage are leavened with dry humor, but the story’s emotional center is the friendship between Helen Webb and the assassin Sam Young, played by Ben Whishaw.
What is Black Doves about?
Helen Webb has spent ten years passing her politician husband Wallace’s secrets to the Black Doves, a clandestine group. When her lover, Jason, is murdered, Helen’s handler, Reed, brings in Sam Young—an old friend and assassin—to help her uncover who is responsible. The investigation connects London’s criminal underworld to a geopolitical crisis.
The premise puts Helen in a double life: she is both a political spouse and a covert operative. Her search for the truth is also a pursuit of vengeance, but the series gives equal weight to what she and Sam mean to each other. Knightley described their bond this way: “They can’t be themselves with anybody else in the world, but they can be their whole selves with each other.”
Is it a comedy or a thriller?
Netflix classifies Black Doves as a thriller. Dark comedy is a useful description of its tone, not a replacement for its genre: the show mixes murder, espionage and stylized action with British wit and moments of dry humor. Its emotional intimacy and friendship story sit alongside the violence rather than turning it into a cozy holiday comedy.

Knightley has likened its Christmas appeal to Die Hard: a choice for viewers seeking action at the holidays rather than a comforting seasonal mood. The Christmas setting shapes the contrast between festive London and the lethal work Helen and Sam are caught up in.

Is the Black Doves organization real?
No. The Black Doves are fictional. Creator Joe Barton told Netflix Tudum that there is no such organization that he knows of in reality; he devised the group as a way to explore Helen’s personality, ethics and worldview. The series’ spy premise should not be mistaken for a claim about a real organization.

Netflix’s Media Center lists season two for release in the United States on November 5, 2026. Its synopsis says Helen will continue passing secrets to the organization as Wallace prepares to become Prime Minister; Reed faces a plot against her position, and Helen reunites with Sam.
