The fall 2025 denim trend behind the Katie Holmes headline is trouser jeans: denim with details borrowed from tailored trousers, such as pleats, a defined crease, or a clean, dressier shape. Think “jeans, but make them dressier.” The archived InStyle newsletter identifies the trend, but its accessible text does not show Holmes’s full outfit or name her exact jeans, so there is no confirmed model to copy.
What are trouser jeans?
Trouser jeans are a category, not one standardized cut. They combine denim with a more tailored impression, and can range from high-rise pleated wide legs to cleaner, non-pleated wide-leg pairs or slimmer flares. To compare a pair, look at its rise, leg shape, front details, wash, and hem rather than relying on the label alone.
Glam’s fall 2025 coverage describes examples including high-rise pleated denim trousers, non-pleated high-waisted wide legs, and a slimmer flare. It also points to a dark-indigo Tory Burch runway version with a relaxed fit and zippered split hem, worn with a matching jacket. How to choose the right trouser-jean shape
Wide leg or slim flare
A wide leg gives the outfit a more relaxed, flowing line; a slim flare keeps the leg closer through the thigh before opening at the hem. Try both with the shoes you expect to wear, since the hem’s length and shape affect how the jeans sit over footwear.

Pleated or clean-front
Pleats bring a visible trouser reference and can make the front feel more tailored. A non-pleated pair offers a simpler line while retaining a high waist or wide leg. Choose according to whether you want the denim detail to be a focal point or a quieter foundation for the rest of the outfit.
Wash and finish
Dark indigo can read especially polished, while lived-in washes make the tailored shape feel more casual. Rigid denim can hold a sharper silhouette; a softer fabric may drape more easily. Madewell head of design Steve Cateron told Glam, “I’m anticipating seeing leg-lengthening fits and tailored elements like a crease, and these lived-in washes.” Frame’s Erik Torstensson described the direction as “a cleaned-up baggy jean in rigid denim for a sharper polished weekday look” and “a chicer baggy jean with a higher rise and slimmer leg.” These are the designers’ perspectives as reported by Glam, not sales or consumer-demand measurements.

How to style trouser jeans
For a polished outfit
Pair a pleated or wide-leg style with a tucked-in white button-up, or try a fitted tee under a structured blazer. A belt can finish the waist. Slim sock booties or platform sandals keep the overall effect dressier; check the hem length with the shoes so the leg does not bunch awkwardly.
For a softer, trend-led look
A cropped sweater or fitted turtleneck works with pleated jeans by keeping the waist detail visible. Clogs lean into the trend-forward styling suggested by Glam, while low-profile sneakers make the same denim feel more casual. The choice of top and footwear can change the impression without changing the jeans.

Trouser jeans are one fall denim direction, not the only one
Fall 2025 coverage also pointed to straight and slim cuts, split hems, low-slung slouchy jeans, cuffed hems, rich indigo, and embellishments. What the Katie Holmes headline does—and does not—confirm
The September 9, 2025 InStyle newsletter archive reproduces the headline and the deck “Jeans, but make them dressier.” Its accessible copy does not provide Holmes’s full outfit or identify the exact jeans she wore. A Glam article published two days later describes trouser jeans as a fall 2025 trend and reports that Holmes and Margot Robbie were spotted wearing the style. So the useful takeaway is the silhouette, not a celebrity product identification: compare the rise, leg, pleats, wash, and hem, then style the pair for the level of polish you want.
