Perry first contacted Cotton about buying paintings from his Cotton Candy Clouds series; he invited her to pose, then used photographs and sketches from a studio sitting as reference for the finished artwork.
How Katy Perry and Will Cotton began working together
In early 2010, Perry emailed Cotton under her given name, Katheryn Hudson, to ask about buying paintings from his 2004 Cotton Candy Clouds series. Cotton recognized her from her music career and, after looking at photographs from her One of the Boys era, suggested she pose for a painting. Perry accepted enthusiastically, according to Cotton’s retrospective account in Rolling Stone.
The candy-land landscapes and pin-up figures were already part of Cotton’s artistic practice. In a 2014 Smithsonian interview, he explained that he had been interested in imagining a person within those settings, and that Perry’s pop-culture image connected with ideas he was already exploring as a painter.
How the album-cover painting was made
The cover is not an unaltered publicity photograph. Perry spent a day posing in Cotton’s studio. Cotton photographed her and made sketches, then used photographic reference to create the composite painting. Contemporary reporting by CBS News described him photographing Perry with real cotton candy, while Cotton later recalled renting a cotton-candy machine for the sitting in his Rolling Stone interview.

The finished work, Cotton Candy Katy, depicts Perry in the artist’s confectionery landscape. The photographs and sketches were part of the process; the published cover image is the resulting painting.
Do not confuse the cover with Cupcake Katy
The same studio sitting also produced photographs and sketches Cotton used as reference for other portraits. Cupcake Katy is a separate painting from the collaboration, not the Teenage Dream cover, as Cotton told Smithsonian Magazine.

The cover was part of a wider visual world
Cotton’s collaboration with Perry extended beyond the album artwork. He also contributed to the art direction for the “California Gurls” video, whose candy-colored imagery developed a related visual vocabulary. The video and the cover are separate works: the former expanded the album era’s look, while Cotton Candy Katy is the painting used for the cover. Cotton discussed the broader collaboration in a 2011 Daily Beast interview.

The candy theme extended from the image to the original release’s packaging. In a 2010 interview with The Guardian, Perry said each cover was individually spritzed to smell like candyfloss, which she associated with childhood. CBS News reported that the first-run Digipak used cotton-candy-scented paper.
