But Perry was absent from the event. She later posted a carousel on Instagram containing two images that appeared to show her at the gala. She also included a screenshot of a conversation with her mother, Mary Hudson, whose reaction indicated that the image had initially seemed authentic. Perry’s caption said she “couldn’t make it to the MET” because she “had to work.”
Her post was therefore not an admission that she had secretly attended or an attempt to pass off a fake photograph as genuine. It was a correction—and a joke about how convincing the images had been.
Were the images AI-generated?
Reporting from ABC News and other fact-checking organizations described the pictures as AI-generated or AI-assisted. That distinction matters. The available reporting does not establish that every pixel came from one text-to-image model.
ABC News reported that a Brazilian Perry fan using the name “Sali” said he created one of the images with an AI image generator, Photoshop, and elements from real images. The most accurate description is therefore an AI-assisted composite: generated material was combined with conventional image editing and existing photographic material.

There is no reliable evidence in the reporting that identifies a particular AI model, model version, prompt, or complete production history for every image. Claims that name a specific generator or suggest that the entire photograph was produced in one step go beyond what has been established.
Why did the fake photograph look believable?

The connection between Perry’s fashion persona and the 2024 theme is an inference, not proof that the creator deliberately engineered every detail for that reason. Still, it shows why context can make synthetic media persuasive: the claim did not look random or impossible at first glance.

How widely did the image spread?

How to verify a viral celebrity image
Do not rely on a single clue or on the popularity of the post. Use several independent checks:
- Check whether the person actually attended. Look for a statement from the celebrity, their representative, or credible contemporaneous event coverage. In Perry’s case, her own caption confirmed that she had not attended.
- Compare independent red-carpet coverage. Search for photographs and arrival reports from established news organizations, the event’s official channels, and reputable fashion publications. An alleged attendee who is absent from every independent arrival list deserves scrutiny.
