Katy Perry was announced on 25 July 2024 as the headliner of the Telstra Pre-Game Entertainment at the Toyota AFL Grand Final, scheduled for 28 September at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Contemporary coverage reported both approving and critical social-media responses, but it did not establish how Australians overall felt about the booking.
What the AFL announced
The Australian Football League (AFL) named Perry as the lead performer for the Grand Final’s pre-game entertainment—not a halftime show. The match and performance were scheduled for Saturday, 28 September 2024, at the MCG. The AFL announcement was published on 25 July.

At the time, Perry’s sixth studio album, 143, was due for release on 20 September 2024 and available for preorder, the AFL said. The announcement also cited more than 115 billion streams, 143 million records sold globally and 148 platinum ARIA certifications as career figures; those numbers were attributed to the AFL and were not accompanied by methodology in the announcement.
Perry said in the AFL announcement: “I’m so excited to be back in Australia and back at the mighty MCG to perform in front of 100,000 of the best and loudest fans in the world at this year’s Toyota AFL Grand Final. See you in September Oi Oi Oi!” Her reference to 100,000 was part of her statement, not an audited attendance figure.

What was reported about the reaction
PerthNow’s announcement-day report cited social-media posts expressing enthusiasm as well as criticism. That supports describing the online response as varied; it does not show that Australians as a whole were split, or establish which view was more common. The report did not provide a representative survey or a measured breakdown of public opinion.
ABC News’ announcement coverage also reported the booking and described Perry as an American pop star. Neither that coverage nor the cited social-media examples amount to polling of Australian fans.

Who else was part of the event entertainment?
The initial announcement focused on Perry as headliner. In its 27 September event explainer, the AFL listed Cody Simpson, Christine Anu, Zipporah Corser-Anu and Mike Brady among the supporting pre-match performers. ABC News’ report after the event said Tina Arena performed with Perry. Those are later event details, distinct from the names in the original announcement.

In its later account, ABC News reported on Perry’s set and Arena’s appearance. The booking was therefore a pre-game headline performance at the 2024 Grand Final, rather than a future or halftime appearance.
