Kate Upton returned to the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue in 2024, six years after her previous feature. Photographed by Yu Tsai in Mexico, she appeared on her fourth cover for the brand in its 60th-anniversary edition. The cover look was a pink-and-red Normaillot two-piece, and the edition also included a separate reunion shoot with SI Swimsuit alumni.
What was Kate Upton’s 2024 SI Swimsuit return?
The return was part of the 2024 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, not a new shoot in 2026. Upton’s previous SI Swimsuit feature was in 2018. Her fourth cover followed earlier covers in 2012, 2013 and 2017. The 2024 edition marked the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
SI’s announcement presented seven cover treatments for the issue, including individual covers featuring Chrissy Teigen, Gayle King, Hunter McGrady and Upton, as well as a collectible cover featuring three women from the legends shoot. Its release headline highlighted 52 women. These were launch details for the 2024 edition, not a statement about current magazine availability.
Where was the cover shoot, and what did Upton wear?
Yu Tsai photographed Upton in Mexico for the 2024 issue. SI’s cover-model profile identifies her cover look as a pink-and-red Normaillot two-piece. The official gallery, published May 14, 2024, credits additional photographed swimwear from Fleur du Mal, Moncler, Eres, Versace, Tropic of C and Agent Provocateur. Some gallery looks also include Sergio Hudson tops and Grace Ling dresses. These captions identify the outfits shown; they do not establish that the same items remain available or that Upton endorses the brands.

The magazine also featured Upton in a separate 2024 legends shoot in Hollywood, Florida. Yu Tsai photographed that group shoot, where her look was credited to a Maria Lucia Hohan dress, Giuseppe Zanotti shoes and Charlie Lapson accessories. It was a dressed-up alumni feature, distinct from the Mexico swimwear shoot.
How Upton described returning as a cover model
In her SI Swimsuit interview, Upton reflected on appearing on a cover at 19 and returning at 31. “It feels pretty special being a cover model at 19 for Sports Illustrated Swimsuit and then again at 31 especially [because] everyone is like when you start off modeling, your career is over at 23,” she said.

She also spoke about body image and self-acceptance. “What I hope people take away from my interview and my photos is finding an appreciation in themselves, and finding their own uniqueness and giving themselves a break, you know, allowing that ride of body image; sometimes you have lows, sometimes you have highs,” she said. “You don’t need to tear yourself down every single time you feel not your best. You can just focus back on your body, listen and try to get to a better place and really just accept your differences.” Those are Upton’s personal reflections, not medical or psychological guidance.
Upton said the atmosphere on set helped her feel at ease: “Shooting bikinis is not comfortable, no one is comfortable, but [the] energy and love and the set that [SI Swimsuit] built makes it comfortable.”

Why the 2024 edition also looked back
The anniversary issue paired individual covers with a legends shoot involving SI Swimsuit alumni. Editor in chief MJ Day described the gathering as a way to connect the franchise’s history with its present and future: “We assembled some of our most influential alumni together for one legendary photo shoot. Sure, it looks back on history. But more significantly, it’s a window into the present—where we are right now—and a hope for the future.”
SI’s order article described the 2024 issue as the 60th edition and said it would reach newsstands on May 17, 2024. That date records the original launch; it does not confirm current stock or price.
