The report said Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince William were preparing for future roles amid the King’s cancer treatment, but it established neither a timetable nor a confirmed succession plan. Official records confirm William is heir to the throne and that the Waleses continue to undertake royal duties; they do not confirm private planning.
What did the December 2024 report say?
PEOPLE published its feature on December 11, 2024, after Catherine’s appearance at the Together At Christmas service on December 6. AOL republished the story in full under a title that adds “Queen” to the phrase “future role.” The report’s central claim was that the couple were preparing for their eventual roles earlier than they had expected.
That formulation belongs to the report’s sources, not to an official announcement. The feature did not give a date for a future accession or set out a detailed transition plan.
Who said the role may come sooner?
Royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith made the “sooner than expected” assessment in a quotation reproduced by PEOPLE. She said: “Although the King is carrying out his duties with typical determination, he has had to accept limitations during his cancer treatment. As a result William has been taking on more responsibilities, and he and Kate have been preparing for their future roles sooner than they would have expected.” Read the PEOPLE feature.

Smith’s comment is an attributed interpretation. Other comments in the feature about preparedness and behind-the-scenes planning came from unnamed sources. Those accounts should not be treated as statements from the Royal Household or as confirmation of a settled plan.

The Royal Family describes the Princess of Wales as supporting the King and Royal Family through engagements, annual royal events, charitable work and patronages. The profile does not describe Catherine as heir to the throne. See the Princess of Wales’s official profile.
Public engagement records are not evidence of private plans
The Royal Household’s report for the 2025–26 financial year records 2,273 engagements by the Prince and Princess of Wales together with other working members of the Royal Family. Does temporary cover mean a succession is imminent?
No. The Royal Family’s Counsellors of State explainer describes a mechanism for temporary circumstances such as illness or absence abroad: two or more Counsellors can carry out most of the Sovereign’s duties, with exceptions for specified constitutional functions. This is not a succession timetable, an abdication process or proof that a transition is imminent. Read the Counsellors of State explainer.

- Additional claims about private preparations were attributed to unnamed sources in that feature.
- The cited reporting and official records establish no date for a future accession and no detailed transition plan.
The 2024 feature is a dated report, not a current announcement. Later official engagement records show ongoing public work, but they do not independently verify what the couple may be doing privately to prepare for future roles.
