1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe photograph was digitally edited, but the phrase “16 Photoshop errors” is more precise when treated as a reported list of visual anomalies—not an official forensic tally. Catherine, Princess of Wales, acknowledged editing the Mother’s Day portrait on March 11, 2024, after several major picture agencies withdrew or flagged the image.
Yes—the photograph was edited. Kensington Palace released the Mother’s Day portrait on March 10, 2024, and Catherine, Princess of Wales, acknowledged the next day that she had edited it. Picture agencies including the Associated Press, AFP, Reuters, Getty Images and PA Media withdrew or flagged the image because it appeared to breach their standards for editorial photographs.
However, the often-repeated claim that the picture contained “16 Photoshop errors” needs careful wording. The number came from a Daily Mail review based on observations by photographers. It was not an official forensic finding showing that exactly 16 separate Photoshop operations occurred. The strongest conclusion supported by the evidence is that the released image was digitally manipulated and contained multiple visible inconsistencies—not that it was entirely generated by artificial intelligence or that the people in it were fabricated.
What happened to Kate Middleton’s Mother’s Day photograph?
In the United Kingdom, Mother’s Day fell on March 10 in 2024. Kensington Palace released a family portrait of Catherine with Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, crediting Prince William as the photographer. It was the first official image of Catherine released after she underwent planned abdominal surgery in January.

The photograph arrived during intense public interest in Catherine’s recovery and whereabouts. That context made the image more than a routine family portrait: it was also a highly anticipated reassurance from the Palace.
Within hours, picture agencies began examining the file. The Associated Press issued a “kill” notice, instructing clients to withdraw the photograph, saying that closer inspection indicated the source had manipulated the image. AFP, Reuters, Getty Images and PA Media also withdrew it or warned clients about its use.
Why did the news agencies withdraw it?
Professional news organizations distinguish between normal photographic processing and changes that alter the content of a news image. Adjusting exposure, color, contrast or cropping is generally acceptable within an agency’s rules. Adding, removing or materially reshaping parts of a scene is a different matter because it can change what the viewer believes happened.
The agencies’ decision was therefore an editorial-integrity judgment. It did not mean that every visible irregularity had been proven to be a deliberate deception, nor that family photographs can never be edited. The problem was that the supplied image appeared to contain content-level manipulation, and the Palace did not promptly provide the unedited original when agencies sought clarification.
For a news agency, uncertainty about the source file matters. An image distributed as an official photograph is expected to represent the scene in a way that does not materially mislead the audience. Once agencies could not establish that standard, withdrawal was the responsible option.

Catherine apologized and admitted editing the image
On March 11, Catherine posted an apology through the official Prince and Princess of Wales account. She said that, like many amateur photographers, she occasionally experimented with editing and apologized for any confusion caused by the photograph.
That statement confirmed the central fact: the image was not an untouched camera file. It did not, by itself, explain every alteration, identify the original frames or establish why particular parts of the image had been changed.
What did the image metadata show?
PA Media reported that metadata attached to the file supplied by Kensington Palace showed two saves in Adobe Photoshop on an Apple Mac: one on Friday night and another on Saturday morning.
This supports Catherine’s acknowledgment that the image had been edited. But metadata is not a complete editing history. Two Photoshop saves do not reveal how many layers were used, whether multiple photographs were combined, which areas were retouched, who made each change or whether the edits were intended to conceal information. They also do not establish that the image was created with generative artificial intelligence.
The 16 reported anomalies in the photograph
The “16 errors” figure was attributed to a Daily Mail review that consulted photographers. The observations below should be understood as reported visual anomalies, not as 16 independently proven Photoshop edits. Some could result from compositing, masking, local retouching, sharpening, compression or resampling.

- Missing material above Charlotte’s left hand: An area above Princess Charlotte’s left hand appeared to contain material that had been erased or interrupted.
- Irregular zipper: The zipper on Catherine’s top appeared to change direction or look unnatural.
- Charlotte’s hair transition: Parts of Charlotte’s hair appeared to meet surrounding areas abruptly, as though sections had been masked or combined.
- Protrusion near Charlotte’s skirt: A strange shape appeared around the edge of her skirt.
- Blur around Charlotte’s knee: The area near her knee appeared softer or less coherent than nearby details.
- Disrupted pattern on Louis’s sleeve: The pattern on Prince Louis’s sweater sleeve appeared skewed or interrupted.
- Blurry right thumb: Louis’s right thumb appeared unusually blurred or malformed.
- First distortion on the ledge near Louis: A section of the ledge beside him appeared warped.
- Second distortion on the ledge: Another nearby portion of the ledge also appeared inconsistent with the surrounding straight lines.
- Warped step behind Louis: The step or edge behind him appeared to bend or change alignment.
- Cut-off finger: One finger appeared to end in an unusual way, raising the possibility of masking or an awkward composite.
- Enhanced edge on George’s sweater: The edge of Prince George’s blue sweater appeared unnaturally sharp or emphasized.
- Blur around Catherine’s hand: The area around Catherine’s hand appeared out of focus compared with adjacent details.
- Airbrushed-looking hair: Some of Catherine’s hair appeared unusually smooth or retouched.
- Strangely tucked section of Charlotte’s hair: A section of Charlotte’s hair appeared to meet her clothing or the surrounding background in an unnatural way.
- Unusual lines on George’s sleeve: Lines in the pattern of George’s sweater sleeve appeared inconsistent or distorted.
A separate design-focused review by WIRED also identified inconsistent edges, blur and zipper details. Those observations overlap with the reported list but do not prove a precise editing workflow. A visible artifact can be caused by several processes, including combining frames, moving a masked object, cloning part of a background, sharpening an edge or repeatedly saving a compressed image.
What the evidence proves—and what it does not
| Supported conclusion | What the evidence shows |
|---|---|
| The image was edited. | Catherine acknowledged editing it, and reported metadata showed two Adobe Photoshop saves. |
| Agencies considered the manipulation serious enough to withdraw the image. | Several major picture agencies issued withdrawal notices or warnings under their editorial standards. |
| The file contained visible inconsistencies. | Photographers and other reviewers identified irregular edges, blur, pattern breaks and apparent distortions. |
| The Palace did not immediately resolve the source-file question. | Contemporary reporting said the unedited original was not provided when agencies requested clarification. |
Those facts do not establish that:
- the people in the photograph were wholly fabricated;
- the image was generated by artificial intelligence;
- the portrait combined photographs taken on different dates;
- the family members were replaced by body doubles;
- the editing concealed a medical emergency; or
- there were exactly 16 separate Photoshop operations.
Those theories circulated online, but they were not demonstrated by the agency notices, the reported metadata, Catherine’s apology or the visual reviews. Editing is confirmed; the purpose and complete method of the editing are not.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →How could an edited family portrait produce so many artifacts?
A family portrait does not always come from one perfect exposure. A photographer may take several frames and combine them so that everyone has an acceptable expression, open eyes and a natural pose. In principle, that kind of compositing can produce a better family photograph. The difficulty arises when the joins are visible or when the final image is distributed as an official photograph without making its manipulation clear.
Common editing processes that can create the kinds of anomalies reported here include:
- Layer compositing: placing part of one frame over another;
- Masking: selectively revealing or hiding portions of a layer;
- Cloning: copying nearby pixels to remove or repair an object;
- Local blur: softening a boundary to hide a join;
- Sharpening: making one edge stand out more strongly than surrounding details;
- Resampling and compression: changing the appearance of fine patterns and edges when the file is resized or repeatedly saved.
Someone who wants to understand these mechanisms may find a Photoshop for Beginners book useful as a learning resource. That is an educational recommendation, not evidence about who edited the royal portrait or what exact steps were used. Disclosure: this is an affiliate recommendation; availability and the appropriate edition should be checked before publication.
Why this became a trust story rather than a minor Photoshop mistake
The controversy grew because the image was released at a sensitive moment. Catherine had recently undergone surgery, the Palace had offered limited information about her recovery, and the Mother’s Day portrait was expected to reassure the public. When professional agencies identified apparent manipulation and withdrew the image, viewers began questioning not only the retouching but also the process behind the Palace’s communications.

In that setting, an edited family photograph carried a higher credibility burden than an informal social-media snapshot. Even harmless intentions—such as combining frames to make a better family picture—can become consequential when the image is presented as an official record and distributed by news organizations.
The episode also illustrated why provenance matters. A file’s metadata, an agency’s editorial standards and the availability of an original can be more informative than a viral list of visual “errors.” The list drew attention to the problem, but it does not replace a documented comparison with the original camera files.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Bottom line
Kate Middleton’s 2024 Mother’s Day photograph was digitally edited: Catherine said so, and reported metadata showed that the file had been saved in Photoshop twice. Multiple agencies withdrew it after finding apparent content-level manipulation. The widely cited “16 errors” are best described as 16 reported anomalies identified by photographers—not 16 officially verified Photoshop acts.
The evidence supports a manipulated or composited photograph with visible inconsistencies. It does not support claims that the family was digitally fabricated, that artificial intelligence generated the image or that the edits prove anything about Catherine’s medical condition. The lasting issue was the gap between an official image’s expected authenticity and the unexplained editing visible in the file.

What are the 16 errors in the photograph?
The figure came from a Daily Mail review that consulted photographers. It describes reported visual anomalies, not 16 separately verified Photoshop operations.
Does the photo prove that it was generated by AI or that the family was fake?
No. The available evidence confirms editing and visible inconsistencies, but it does not prove that the image was AI-generated, that the people were fabricated or that the editing concealed a medical emergency.
Why did news agencies withdraw the image?
News agencies generally allow ordinary adjustments such as exposure, color and cropping, but restrict changes that add, remove or materially alter content. They withdrew the image because it appeared to exceed those standards and the source file was not promptly clarified.
