Sophie Winkleman, also known as Lady Frederick Windsor, said the Princess of Wales was “doing so well” after seeing her at Wimbledon. The remark was a personal observation, reported on 30 September 2024—not a medical update. Catherine had announced on 9 September that she had completed chemotherapy, while also saying her recovery would be long.

Who said the Princess of Wales was “doing so well”?

Winkleman made the comment in an interview with Hello!, as reported by Marie Claire on 30 September 2024. She said she had last seen Catherine at Wimbledon and described her as “amazingly brave” and “doing so well.” Winkleman’s words convey what she observed; she was not speaking as a doctor or palace medical spokesperson.

“I last saw her at Wimbledon; it was so cheering to see her, beautiful as ever. She’s been amazingly brave and is doing so well.”

What had Catherine said about chemotherapy and recovery?

On 9 September 2024, Catherine announced in a video message that she had completed chemotherapy. Her message described the past nine months as difficult for her family and said she would take each day as it came. She also expressed relief at finishing treatment while making clear that recovery was not complete.

“Although I have finished chemotherapy, my path to healing and full recovery is long and I must continue to take each day as it comes.”

Tatler reproduced the dated message, including Catherine’s statement that completing chemotherapy was a relief. She said she hoped to return to work and some public engagements when she was able.

How the two statements differ

Statement Date What it establishes
Catherine’s announcement 9 September 2024 She had completed chemotherapy and described a long path to healing and full recovery.
Winkleman’s observation Reported 30 September 2024 Winkleman said Catherine seemed to be doing well when she saw her at Wimbledon.

The first was Catherine’s own account of a treatment milestone and her recovery outlook at that time. The second was a general impression from someone who had seen her. Neither statement should be read as a clinical assessment or a report on her current health.

What the reports do not establish

  • They do not identify Catherine’s cancer type or provide details of her treatment regimen.
  • Finishing chemotherapy does not mean that she had completed recovery; her September message explicitly described recovery as a long process.
  • Winkleman’s comment does not provide a prognosis or establish Catherine’s health status today. These reports document what was said in September 2024, not a current medical update.

The cited coverage notes that Catherine disclosed a cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and later said she had begun preventative chemotherapy, but does not provide further clinical detail.
