Catherine, Princess of Wales, formerly known as Kate Middleton, was hospitalized at The London Clinic in London on January 16, 2024, for what Kensington Palace described as planned abdominal surgery. She left the hospital on January 29 after nearly two weeks. The palace did not initially disclose the condition or the operation.
Her later statements changed the medical context: post-operative tests found cancer, and she subsequently underwent preventative chemotherapy. Catherine said in January 2025 that her cancer was in remission. Nothing in the verified record supports saying that she is currently hospitalized or that the January operation was publicly identified as cancer surgery.
What happened in January 2024?
Kensington Palace announced on January 17, 2024, that Catherine had been admitted to The London Clinic the previous day for planned abdominal surgery. The statement said the procedure had been successful and that she was expected to remain in hospital for 10 to 14 days.
The palace also made an explicit privacy request. Catherine wished her personal medical information to remain private, so the announcement did not name her diagnosis, specify the operation, or describe its expected outcome beyond the immediate recovery plan.

Was the January surgery cancer surgery?
That was not what the original announcement said. Kensington Palace described only “planned abdominal surgery.” On March 22, Catherine explained that doctors had thought her condition was non-cancerous when she underwent the operation. Post-operative testing later found cancer.
That sequence matters. The public record supports saying that cancer was discovered after the January procedure, not that the palace announced cancer surgery in January. Catherine did not publicly identify the type or stage of cancer, and those details should not be filled in with speculation.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn January 2025, she described her cancer as being in remission. “In remission” is the wording supported by her update; it should not be casually rewritten as “cured” or “cancer-free.” Those terms can imply a medical conclusion she did not announce.
The Royal Household’s 2024–25 annual report described phased returns to public-facing duties for the King and the Princess of Wales after cancer treatment. Official Court Circular records also show Catherine undertaking engagements in 2026. These records are consistent with a return to public work, not an ongoing hospitalization.

What the headline leaves out
- The hospitalization was in 2024: January 16 through January 29, not a current admission.
- The hospital was The London Clinic: her discharge statement thanked its staff.
- The procedure was not identified: the palace disclosed planned abdominal surgery but not a hysterectomy, bowel operation, or any other named procedure.
- The cancer disclosure came later: Catherine announced it on March 22, after post-operative testing.
- Her condition has not been described in full: the type and stage of cancer were not publicly disclosed.
- Her medical episode was separate from King Charles III’s: Charles was treated during the same month for an enlarged prostate, but the two hospitalizations involved separate medical issues and separate announcements.
Why precise wording matters
Royal health news often travels through headlines detached from the dates and qualifications in the original statements. In this case, a headline saying “Kate Middleton hospitalized following abdominal surgery” can be read as a live update even though it describes an event from January 2024.
The most accurate summary is narrower: Catherine, Princess of Wales, was hospitalized for planned abdominal surgery in January 2024; she was discharged after nearly two weeks; subsequent testing led to a cancer diagnosis and preventative chemotherapy; and she later reported that her cancer was in remission while returning gradually to public duties.
