The BBC said it had received complaints that its coverage of Catherine, Princess of Wales’s cancer announcement was “excessive and insensitive.” It defended its reporting as proportionate to a major public story, saying it avoided speculation about undisclosed medical details and reported her request for privacy. The broadcaster also acknowledged that not everyone would agree with its approach.
What prompted complaints about the BBC’s coverage?
On 22 March 2024, Catherine, Princess of Wales, announced in a video message that she was receiving cancer treatment. The cancer type was not disclosed in the contemporary reporting cited here. The BBC’s response to complaints was reported by The Independent on 5 April 2024.
The complaints described the BBC’s coverage as “excessive and insensitive.” That wording reflects complainants’ assessment of the volume and tone; it is not an independently established finding about the reporting.
How did the BBC defend its reporting?
The BBC said it considered the story significant and explained what was known. Its account said the broadcaster showed the Princess’s personal video message in full, did not speculate about medical details she had not disclosed, and reported her request for privacy. A BBC spokesperson also said: “We always give careful consideration to the editorial decisions we make.”

In the response reproduced by The Independent, the BBC added: “While we have a responsibility to report on stories that are of interest to our audience, we appreciate that not everyone would have approved of the approach we took.” This sets out the broadcaster’s stated balance: public interest and audience interest on one side, sensitivity and privacy on the other.
What was the context around the announcement?
In the weeks before the announcement, online speculation about the Princess’s health intensified. The Associated Press reported that a Mother’s Day photograph of the Princess with her children—later withdrawn by news agencies over concerns it had been manipulated—became part of the rumor cycle and negative coverage. That episode is context for the climate surrounding the announcement; it does not establish that every outlet’s reporting had the same effect.

The palace said the Prince and Princess of Wales were “extremely moved” by public support and grateful for understanding of their request for privacy, according to The Independent’s account of the statement. The privacy request was therefore central both to the BBC’s explanation of its coverage and to the palace’s response to public attention.

- It establishes the BBC’s response: the broadcaster said it received complaints, defended its coverage as reporting on a significant story, and said it avoided speculation about undisclosed medical details.
- It does not establish a complaint total: the cited reporting gives no number.
- It does not provide an independent ruling: these reports do not determine whether the BBC’s coverage was excessive or insensitive, or document a regulator’s decision.
- It does not disclose further medical details: the cited contemporary reporting did not identify the cancer type, stage, prognosis, or current medical status.
The complaints concerned how much and what kind of coverage the announcement received—not a disclosed cancer subtype. The available accounts record the criticism and the BBC’s answer, rather than independently measuring the BBC’s airtime or adjudicating the merits of the complaints.
