William’s current principal title is The Prince of Wales, and Catherine’s is The Princess of Wales. Together they are styled The Prince and Princess of Wales. Their titles reflect two milestones: William’s marriage in 2011 and the accession of King Charles III in 2022.
What are William and Catherine’s official titles?
The Royal Family’s official biographies identify William as The Prince of Wales and Catherine as The Princess of Wales. The Royal Family says King Charles announced William’s new title after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The Prince of Wales and The Princess of Wales are the forms used in their biographies.
“Kate Middleton” is the familiar name often used for Catherine, but the Royal Family biography calls her Catherine and identifies her by her current title. She became a member of the Royal Family when she married William.
How William’s titles changed
Marriage titles in 2011
William married Catherine, then Miss Catherine Middleton, on 29 April 2011. On their wedding day, Queen Elizabeth II conferred the Dukedom of Cambridge on William. His associated titles included Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus. The Royal Family’s account of the Duke of Cambridge records these titles.

Titles after Charles III became king

The Royal Family’s biographies confirm the titles it uses for William and Catherine and summarize the King’s announcement. The College of Arms explains that formal documents recorded there determine royal names, styles and titles, and discusses the Letters Patent of 1917 and 1996 in its overview of royal names. These sources do not establish whether a specific legal instrument was issued for the couple’s current titles, so the documented point is the announcement and the titles now used by the Royal Family.
