Hawn already had Kate and her brother Oliver with Bill Hudson when she and Russell reconnected. Russell’s son Boston was also part of the wider family, and Hawn and Russell’s son Wyatt was born in 1986. In a birthday message reproduced by Vogue, she praised him for showing up despite his busy schedule: “No matter what he was doing in his busy life, he always showed up.” Hawn has also recalled being struck by how naturally Russell connected with her children when they visited her on set. In an account quoted by Vogue from a 2017 interview with People, Hawn said, “He was amazing with them. He was such a natural.”

Those remarks offer a public picture of closeness and care; they do not disclose every private detail of the family’s life. Hudson’s affectionate name for Russell and her own words are the clearest basis for describing him as her father figure.
Kate Hudson and Kurt Russell worked together on screen
Their first shared screen appearance was in the 2016 film Deepwater Horizon, according to Entertainment Tonight. In an interview about the project, Hudson said she enjoyed getting time alone with him: “It’s like I have my daddy all to myself. It’s kind of nice.” The comment captures the warmth she has publicly expressed, while also placing their connection in a specific context: working together on a film.

Russell’s role as a father figure does not change the fact that Bill Hudson is Kate’s biological father. Asked about their relationship in an April 2024 interview with CBS News, Kate said, “I don’t really have one. But it’s like, I, you know, it’s warming up.” She added that she had no expectations and wanted him to be happy. Hawn and Russell have never married. Hawn has explained her view of their partnership in public, emphasizing compatibility and communication rather than marriage as the measure of a lasting relationship. In a 2015 interview with Porter, quoted by ABC News, she said, “A lasting relationship isn’t about marriage. It’s about compatibility and communication.” That is Hawn’s stated perspective, not proof of every private reason the couple has made its choices. ABC News covered her comments.
