It is a diligent, broadly uncontroversial profile—not a definitive one.
What is the documentary Karl about?
Directed by Nick Hooker, Karl is based on William Middleton’s biography, Paradise Now: The Extraordinary Life of Karl Lagerfeld. The film draws on archive footage and people from Lagerfeld’s circle to tell the story of the German-born designer and his place in fashion.
As Clarke describes it, Lagerfeld’s life included leaving Germany for Paris at 19, working for many years at Chloé, taking over Chanel in 1983, and continuing to work across Chanel, Fendi and his own label into his 80s. The review also notes his later celebrity, including the H&M collaboration.
Does Karl get behind Lagerfeld’s public image?
That is where the film falls short for Clarke. Lagerfeld’s familiar look—the white bouffant hairstyle and ponytail, high collars and black leather gloves—was part of a public persona he maintained with theatrical flair. The film offers glimpses of the person and working life behind it, but does not quite get past the performance to explain who he was beneath it.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 2014 Chanel supermarket catwalk set exemplifies the playful showmanship associated with Lagerfeld. Yet spectacle and access are not the same as insight: the documentary’s closeness to its subject does not fully dispel his mystique.
Which interviews and subjects stand out?
Clarke finds the conversations with collaborators more revealing than those with celebrity interviewees Tilda Swinton and Penélope Cruz. Amanda Harlech is among the collaborators whose perspective offers a stronger sense of Lagerfeld at work. The review also recounts an unnamed seamstress, who had worked with him for 50 years, describing him as “the crème de la crème of men.”

The film covers personal history as well as professional milestones, including the death of Lagerfeld’s partner Jacques de Bascher from an AIDS-related illness in 1989. Clarke’s overall judgment remains measured: the documentary is a diligent profile, but not a definitive portrait.
How does the documentary handle controversy?
Clarke says Lagerfeld’s controversial fatphobic comments receive only a very brief mention. That limited treatment matters if you want a rounded account of the designer’s public legacy, rather than a tribute focused primarily on his career, collaborators and creative persona.
