Karate Kid: Legends debuted its first trailer for an audience at New York Comic Con on October 18, 2024. The footage introduced Li Fong and showed Mr. Han seeking help from Daniel LaRusso; Sony’s official synopsis later supplied the fuller story setup, including Li’s move from Beijing to New York and his preparation for a karate competition.
What did the NYCC trailer show?
Sony presented the film’s first poster and trailer during its New York Comic Con panel on October 18, 2024. In a report published the next day, Popverse said the trailer had not yet been released online. Its scene descriptions therefore reflect footage screened for attendees, not a public video available for independent viewing. Popverse’s NYCC report
According to that account, Mr. Han, played by Jackie Chan, brought his pupil to Daniel LaRusso, played by Ralph Macchio, and made clear that he was seeking Daniel rather than Mr. Miyagi. The footage reportedly showed Li Fong, played by Ben Wang, in school and fighting situations, including being picked on and training. It ended with Li wearing a classic-style bandana. Popverse also noted that Cobra Kai characters did not appear in the trailer it saw; their absence from that footage does not establish whether the series is connected to the film’s continuity.
A separate contemporaneous account described street and dojo fights and a brief tease of a karate tournament. Those details, too, should be understood as reporting on the NYCC screening. The available sources do not establish that the exclusive NYCC cut was identical to the trailer later released publicly. CBR’s account of the NYCC trailer

What is the story of Karate Kid: Legends?
Sony’s official synopsis says Li is a kung fu prodigy who relocates from Beijing to New York City with his mother after a family tragedy. He struggles to adjust, finds a new friendship, and attracts the attention of a local karate champion. Mr. Han enlists Daniel to help Li prepare for a karate competition. Sony Pictures’ official film page
Why does Mr. Han ask Daniel LaRusso for help?
The NYCC screening report shows Mr. Han approaching Daniel, while Sony’s synopsis explains the purpose: Han wants Daniel to help prepare Li for the competition. The mentors bring distinct martial-arts traditions to that training. Sony describes Li’s development as learning to combine their approaches, bringing kung fu and karate together rather than treating them as interchangeable styles.

How should viewers distinguish the NYCC footage from the official plot summary?
