The new Karate Kid movie is Karate Kid: Legends, a 2025 action drama that brings Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) together with Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) to guide a new student, Li Fong (Ben Wang). Sony lists the film on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital; its May 30, 2025 theatrical date was announced earlier and is no longer a future release date.
What is Karate Kid: Legends about?
Sony’s synopsis follows Li Fong, a kung fu prodigy who moves to New York City with his mother to attend a prestigious school. He makes friends, but a local karate champion draws him into conflict. Li enters a karate competition and receives guidance from two teachers: Mr. Han, who taught him kung fu, and Daniel LaRusso, whose story began in the original The Karate Kid.
The studio says Li merges the teachers’ distinct styles as he prepares for the competition. That is the film’s fictional premise, not a statement about real-world martial arts instruction. Sony describes the movie as “a completely new story full of action and heart.” Sony Pictures’ official film page
How does the movie connect Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han?
The setup joins two strands of the franchise through Li: Han is his kung fu teacher, while Daniel becomes a second mentor. The October 2024 New York Comic Con trailer report described Han seeking out Daniel. It also quoted Han saying, “I did not come looking for Mr. Miyagi,” followed by, “I came looking for you.” Those lines were reported from a trailer screened at the event, not verified against a public transcript. Should you watch the original The Karate Kid first?
You can approach Karate Kid: Legends through its new student and mentor pairing, but the 1984 The Karate Kid provides context for Daniel LaRusso’s history and his connection to Mr. Miyagi.
