Jillian Lauren Shriner was not one of the people Los Angeles police were seeking when she appeared with a handgun in video released by the LAPD. Officers were searching Eagle Rock for people who had fled a hit-and-run when they encountered her on April 8, 2025. The footage shows parts of the encounter, but it does not settle whether she fired at officers.
Why police were in the neighborhood
On April 8, 2025, Los Angeles Police Department and California Highway Patrol officers were searching in Eagle Rock for three people who had fled a misdemeanor hit-and-run near the 134 Freeway and Figueroa Street. During that search, officers encountered Lauren in a neighboring yard. She was not one of the hit-and-run suspects, according to contemporaneous reporting by the Associated Press.
LAPD identified the woman as Jillian Shriner, known professionally as author Jillian Lauren. She is married to Weezer bassist Scott Shriner; the AP reported no indication that he was involved in the encounter.
What the released video shows—and what it does not
The LAPD released body-camera recordings, home-surveillance footage and dispatch audio. They provide different views of the incident rather than one complete recording. In the body-camera footage, a fence obstructs the officers’ view of much of the yard. Separate surveillance footage shows Lauren leaving the house with a handgun. The AP’s account of the release and CBS Los Angeles’ coverage describe the footage and its separate sources.

Police initially alleged that Lauren pointed a handgun at officers, who then shot her. But the visible clips should not be treated as proof of every disputed action. The AP reported that an LAPD investigator said the available evidence, including body-camera footage, did not make clear whether Lauren fired. The video establishes that she was seen carrying a gun; it does not by itself resolve whether she shot at police.
What happened to Lauren and the criminal case
Lauren was shot and sustained a wound reported as non-life-threatening. In April 2025, she was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and released on $1 million bond. At the time of the AP’s April 10 report, prosecutors had not yet made an immediate charging decision.

In May 2025, prosecutors filed felony charges and Lauren pleaded not guilty, the Los Angeles Times reported. In September, a judge granted her mental-health diversion. The Times reported that successful completion could lead to dismissal of the charges; the diversion order was not itself a dismissal.

In March 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Police Commission found the shooting out of policy, overruling the LAPD chief’s determination. That is an administrative review of the officers’ use of force, distinct from the criminal case against Lauren. It does not determine whether she fired her gun.

The Times’ September 2025 report does not establish whether Lauren completed diversion or whether the charges were dismissed. The commission’s later finding does not answer those separate questions.
