Spoilers for the ending of Kantara: Chapter 1. The reported final twist is that Kanakavathi, presented earlier as Berme’s love interest and as Kulasekhara’s sister, has been involved in the chaos. In the climax, Berme channels Panjurli and defeats her and Kulasekhara, then returns to the well and disappears into it. The ending coverage offers symbolic readings of the broken Shivling and the well, but those readings are not confirmed explanations of the film’s theology or Berme’s fate.

What happens at the end of Kantara: Chapter 1?

In The Times of India’s account of the ending, Kanakavathi is revealed to have been planning the chaos. Earlier, the film frames her as Berme’s love interest and Kulasekhara’s sister; the betrayal changes how those relationships read in the story.

The report describes Berme channeling Panjurli in the final confrontation and defeating both Kanakavathi and Kulasekhara. It also says that the Shivling is fractured during the finale, after which Berme goes back to the well where his journey began, jumps in and disappears.

What does the broken Shivling mean?

The Times of India interprets the fractured Shivling as a sign of divine displeasure. That is the outlet’s symbolic reading, not a meaning independently confirmed by director Rishab Shetty in the sources available here. The film’s image invites that interpretation, but it should not be treated as a settled explanation of what the filmmakers intended.

What does Berme’s disappearance into the well mean?

The ending report reads the well as a passage or divine transition: Berme returns to the place where his journey began and vanishes into it. The report does not establish exactly what happens to him, and the available interview coverage does not provide a filmmaker explanation confirming either his precise fate or the well’s symbolism. The sequence therefore leaves room for interpretation rather than supplying a definitive answer.

Who is Chavundi in Kantara: Chapter 1?

The available sources do not substantiate Chavundi’s exact identity in the film or her theological or genealogical relationship to Panjurli, Guliga, Shiva or other figures. Nor do they establish how the portrayal maps onto local oral traditions. It would be misleading to fill those gaps with a confident deity guide or to identify Chavundi with Chamundi without a source that directly supports that identification.

The Central Board of Film Certification lists the title as KANTARA A LEGEND CHAPTER 1, credits the story to Rishab Shetty and describes deities as integral to the Kantara people in its synopsis. That establishes the film’s broad setting and framing; it is not an exhaustive account of every deity or a definitive guide to community belief. The CBFC listing should not be stretched into a source for relationships it does not describe.

How should the film’s deities be understood in relation to living traditions?

Coverage of the film places it in the context of Bhoota Kola and Daiva traditions, which are living practices rather than merely fictional world-building. In interview coverage, actor Rukmini Vasanth said she had not previously known about those traditions and described the film as a new story. Rishab Shetty also urged audiences not to dress as Daiva or mock the tradition; India Today reported that he referred to the feelings of worshipping communities. These comments are reasons to distinguish the film’s dramatic choices from an authoritative description of community practice.

That distinction matters especially when interpreting the finale: the film’s use of deity names and ritual context does not by itself prove that its relationships, events or symbolism represent a definitive local theology. The available reporting supports the plot account and documents this broader cultural context, but it does not settle Chavundi’s identity or her relationship to the other figures. See the interview coverage from Film Companion, Deccan Herald and India Today.
