Itihashe Hatekhari is a children’s history-book initiative that uses stories of language, citizenship, Partition, food and other everyday subjects to connect the past with questions children can recognize in the present. A 2025 report described the project as a collaboration associated with the Institute of Development Studies Kolkata (IDSK), funded by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, and designed to bring multiple perspectives—including those of communities often left out of dominant historical accounts—into children’s history.
What does “Itihashe Hatekhari” mean?
The name joins itihas, or history, with hatekhori, a Bengali ritual marking a child’s initiation into writing. A 2022 review rendered the phrase loosely as “first lessons.” The name suits a project that treats history not simply as information to memorize, but as a way to begin asking questions about the world.
The initiative is associated with IDSK and funded by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung, according to a January 2025 report. The report describes a three-year project for late-elementary and middle-grade readers. A 2022 review, by contrast, says the three early books were intended for ages 12–14; that age range should not be assumed to apply uniformly to every title.
How the books connect history to everyday life
The series’ approach is to explore how historical events and ideas shape belonging, identity and daily experience. Rather than offer chronology alone, the books invite readers to consider why events happened, whose experiences are recorded, and what consequences followed. In Deshvaag, historian and project co-coordinator Anwesha Sengupta puts the approach this way: “History is not merely a catalogue of what happened and when. History is to understand an event from multiple perspectives. To enquire why and how that event took place, and what were its consequences.”

The 2025 report identifies Sengupta as a historian and academic at IDSK and one of the project’s head coordinators. It quotes her describing an intersectional lens: “There are two things we try to do, with intersectionality as a lens. We want children to understand how gender, caste, and religion come together to shape my worldview but also to shape my past,”
What the early books explore
A 2022 review names three early titles, written for readers aged 12–14, and describes their themes as connected: language politics, citizenship and national belonging, and Partition.

| Book | What it examines |
|---|---|
| Desher Bhasha (The Languages of the Nation) | How language politics can create borders and hierarchies, including through Bengal’s Partition, Bangladesh’s independence struggle, and linguistic and communal conflicts in Assam. |
| Desher Manush (The People of the Nation) | Who is recognized as belonging to the nation, and what exclusion means for those left outside that definition. |
| Deshvaag (Partition) | Partition through individual lives and displaced communities, including its aftermath. |
The 2025 report describes a broader set of nine books published by January 12, 2025, in Bengali, English and Assamese. Its topics include Partition, linguistic diversity, citizenship, the tea trade, ongoing wars, river-boundary politics, food and clothing. This is a dated count, not a verified current catalogue.
The report notes that the Partition volume includes minority experiences, among them lower-caste workers sent to the Andaman Islands and young women’s experiences. It also describes The Languages of Our Country as providing historical context for current language debates, and Desher Manoosh / Citizens of Our Country as a politically focused book about citizenship. Titles and spellings vary across the sources; readers should check the edition and language when looking for a particular book.

Why language and citizenship appear together
The early titles show how questions of language and national belonging can overlap: a language can be a source of identity, but disputes over which languages are recognized can also establish boundaries and hierarchies. The books’ treatment of citizenship asks a related question: who is counted as part of the nation, and what happens to people whose belonging is contested?
The 2025 report quotes Sengupta clarifying the project’s position: “We are not questioning the idea of India, we are not questioning the idea of ‘Indian’,” she said. “What we are trying to convey is how this concept of Indian and India is historically constructed and constantly changing.” This frames citizenship as a historical subject whose meaning has developed over time, rather than as a fixed idea outside history.

What is known about access and readership
The 2025 report says IDSK initially printed 250 Bengali booklets and 100 each in English and Assamese, distributed without charge through teachers and reading groups. The PDFs were also made available online for free. Sengupta estimated about 1,500 readers, while the report cautioned that decentralized PDF distribution makes exact readership difficult to measure. It also said fewer than 100 people took part in workshops in 2023; that figure is workshop participation, not total readership.
The same report recorded IDSK’s hope of making the books available for purchase by the end of 2025. That was a stated intention, not confirmation that sales began. The available reporting establishes free PDF access and earlier print distribution, but not present-day stock, price or commercial availability.

IDSK’s annual reports provide further publication-history records: Itihashe Hatekhari: Deshbhag appears in the 2022–23 report, while Itihashe Haatekhari: Chaer Dunia and the project report Introducing Itihase Hatekhari: Interactions with Children appear in the 2023–24 report. These records confirm publication history, not current availability.
Where the project’s account has limits
The 2025 report says editorial decisions were shaped in part by concern that controversial material could keep books from reaching readers or put collaborators at risk. Sengupta said the Partition book’s discussion of Kashmir was limited; the report also says an Assamese citizenship translation omitted references to detention camps in Assam at the translator’s request. These are accounts of specific editorial decisions from the report and its interviewees, not independent findings about every book or the project as a whole.
For readers, this means the series’ effort to widen historical perspectives exists alongside choices about what can safely or practically be included. The report’s examples are specific; they do not establish that all titles handle sensitive subjects in the same way.
How to assess a title for a young reader
