Kabosu, the Japanese Shiba Inu whose 2010 photograph became the face of the Doge meme and later the inspiration for Dogecoin, died on May 24, 2024, at the age of 18. Her owner, Atsuko Sato, said Kabosu passed away peacefully while being touched. The Dogecoin Foundation confirmed her death and age the same day.
Kabosu was more than a cryptocurrency symbol. She was a rescued companion animal whose expressive face traveled from a personal blog in Japan to one of the internet’s most recognizable images.
Who was Kabosu?
Kabosu was a female Shiba Inu who lived with Atsuko Sato in Sakura, Chiba, Japan. Sato adopted her from an animal shelter in 2008 after the closure of a puppy mill. According to the Dogecoin Foundation, Sato named her after kabosu, a Japanese citrus fruit.
The Foundation gives Kabosu’s birth as approximately November 2, 2005, so her reported age at death was 18. The approximate birth date is important: it should not be treated as a precisely documented birth certificate date.

How Kabosu died
Sato announced Kabosu’s death on May 24, 2024. In her account, Sato described Kabosu as passing quietly and peacefully while she was being touched. That wording comes from Sato’s announcement; it is best understood as her personal description rather than an independently verified medical account.
The Dogecoin Foundation published its own tribute and confirmed the date and reported age. Kabosu’s death was also covered at the time by independent news organizations, including NPR and The Associated Press.
The photograph that became Doge
In 2010, Sato posted a photograph of Kabosu to her personal blog. Kabosu is seated and looking toward the camera with an alert, quizzical expression. The image spread online and became the source photograph for the “Doge” meme.
Doge posts commonly placed short, colorful phrases around the image in deliberately informal English, often using Comic Sans-style lettering. Expressions such as “wow,” “so cute,” or “much amaze” helped give the meme its recognizable voice. The humor came partly from presenting the dog’s imagined inner thoughts in playful, grammatically unusual language.

How Kabosu became connected to Dogecoin
Dogecoin launched on December 6, 2013, created by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a lighthearted response to the increasingly serious tone surrounding cryptocurrency at the time. Its branding drew on the Doge meme and used Shiba Inu imagery associated with Kabosu’s photograph.
That distinction matters: Kabosu did not create Dogecoin, develop its software, own the cryptocurrency, or participate in its operation. She was the dog depicted in the photograph that inspired the meme, while Markus and Palmer created the coin.
Dogecoin later became a major internet and cryptocurrency phenomenon, but Kabosu’s role remained symbolic. Her face represented the coin and its community; she was not a corporate mascot with control over the project.

Kabosu’s origin story gave the image an importance beyond online speculation. She had been rescued and adopted after a puppy mill closed. The Dogecoin Foundation has emphasized that background in its tributes, presenting her story as one connected to adoption, compassion, hope, and animal welfare.
That context can easily disappear when Kabosu is discussed only as a cryptocurrency logo. Before her image became a meme, she was a pet photographed by her owner. The internet’s reaction transformed an ordinary moment at home into a global cultural symbol, but it did not change the central fact of her life: Kabosu was Sato’s beloved companion.

A memorial in Sakura
Kabosu’s online legacy also led to a permanent memorial in her home region. The Dogecoin and Doge communities raised almost $100,000 in 2022, according to the Dogecoin Foundation, to fund a bronze memorial at Furusato Square in Sakura, described as Kabosu’s favorite park.
The memorial was unveiled on November 2, 2023, around Kabosu’s approximate birthday. It provides a physical place connected to her life, rather than leaving her memory solely in memes, cryptocurrency discussions, and social-media tributes.
Why Kabosu mattered to internet culture
Kabosu’s significance rests on three overlapping identities:
- A companion animal: She was Sato’s adopted Shiba Inu and a regular subject of her owner’s blog and social posts.
- A meme subject: One photograph became the basis for Doge, a widely reused form of internet humor.
- A cryptocurrency emblem: Dogecoin adopted the Shiba Inu image associated with Doge when it launched in 2013.
These identities should not be collapsed into one. Kabosu was not a cryptocurrency celebrity in the ordinary human sense, and she did not deliberately perform for an online audience. Her fame came from the way people interpreted and reused a single photograph.
Nor should Kabosu be confused with other famous meme dogs, including Balltze, the Shiba Inu better known online as Cheems, who died in 2023. Several dogs have become important internet characters, but they are different animals with different stories.

Remembering Kabosu without reducing her to a logo
Online tributes understandably focused on Doge and Dogecoin, the two cultural forces that made Kabosu famous. But the more complete story begins earlier: a dog was rescued, adopted, photographed at home, and loved by her owner.
That ordinary beginning is part of what made Kabosu’s story so powerful. The photograph did not show a fictional mascot created for a marketing campaign. It showed a real animal whose personality, expression, and relationship with Sato happened to resonate with millions of people.
Kabosu died on May 24, 2024, but her image remains embedded in internet history. The bronze memorial in Sakura and the continued emphasis on adoption and animal welfare offer a way to remember her as more than the face of a meme or a digital currency.

Kabosu’s image and Dogecoin’s name have inspired fan art and merchandise, but the Dogecoin Foundation’s trademark guidance cautions against implying official endorsement or using the Dogecoin name and logo in bad faith. That is particularly relevant when commercial products use Kabosu’s likeness or Dogecoin branding: a fan-made item is not automatically an official product, and an article should not suggest an endorsement that has not been established.
