The “It’s Gonna Be May” meme turns a lyric from *NSYNC’s 2000 hit “It’s Gonna Be Me” into a joke about the calendar. Justin Timberlake sings “me” in a way many listeners hear as “May,” so a photo or GIF of him captioned with the line works best in the final days of April, just before May begins.
What does “It’s Gonna Be May” mean?
It is a misheard-lyric joke, also known as a mondegreen. The song’s actual title and lyric are “It’s Gonna Be Me,” but Timberlake’s pronunciation makes the last word sound like “May” to many listeners. Posted at the end of April, the line seems to predict the next month. The meme typically pairs the caption “It’s gonna be May” with an image or GIF of Timberlake.
A related early-May variation uses the phrase “So About Tomorrow.” The original joke, however, is the calendar pun: the lyric sounds like a forecast that May is coming.
Why does Justin Timberlake sing “me” like “May”?
Timberlake has credited producer Max Martin with asking him to use that pronunciation. In an account of a radio interview, TIME quoted Timberlake saying, “I think he just wanted me to sound like I was from Tennessee.”

Official Charts later reported Timberlake and bandmate JC Chasez recounting the producer’s direction in an interview. It identifies Max Martin, Rami Yacoub and Andreas Carlsson as the song’s writers. The pronunciation was deliberate, according to the band’s account; the meme comes from how the result sounds to listeners.
Where did the meme come from?
Know Your Meme’s entry dates an early image post by Tumblr user amyricha to January 29, 2012. It also documents a calendar-image post on March 15, 2012, a BuzzFeed repost the next day, and a video upload on April 29. That chronology is attributed to Know Your Meme; it does not establish that the original Tumblr archive independently verifies each detail.

The joke became a recurring seasonal post around the last days of April and the start of May. Its timing is the point: posting the line when April is nearly over makes the lyric sound like a timely announcement.

The meme grew beyond reposted Timberlake images. Know Your Meme records a Maytag parody campaign in 2019 and an alternate song title on Spotify and Apple Music in 2020. In 2025, bandmates Lance Bass and Joey Fatone commented on the recurring fan engagement and the range of variations in an article by People, as summarized by Know Your Meme.

Those examples show the joke’s reach into brand and artist engagement, not that every *NSYNC member made or shared every version. Its familiar annual return still depends on the same simple pun: “me” sounds like “May,” and April is about to end.
