Justin Timberlake gave “Selfish” its live debut at a free, one-night-only hometown concert at Memphis’s Orpheum Theatre on January 19, 2024. The show also offered an early glimpse of his next solo era: RCA released “Selfish” and its video on January 25, ahead of the album Everything I Thought It Was.
Where and when Timberlake debuted “Selfish”
The live debut took place at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis on January 19, 2024. The Recording Academy described the performance as a “One Night Only” hometown show; fans obtained free tickets through a Ticketmaster lottery. Us Weekly also reported the next day that Timberlake had performed the song live for the first time at the concert.
Timberlake spoke about the personal significance of returning to the theater. As quoted in the Recording Academy’s January 22 recap, he told the crowd: “I’ve been dreaming for a long time to come back to my hometown and play the Orpheum. My mother used to bring me here to see shows, and everything looks so much bigger. But this city and this venue is very, very special to me.” He also welcomed traveling fans with, “Welcome to the greatest city on Earth.”
What happened during the performance
The Recording Academy reports that the concert lasted 90 minutes and included 17 songs, largely drawing on Timberlake’s familiar catalog. “Selfish” was one of two new songs featured, but the two were presented differently: DJ Andrew Hypes played a clip of “No Angels” while Timberlake bounced along and urged the crowd to dance; Timberlake then returned to the stage and performed “Selfish.” The recap describes “Selfish” as a heartfelt midtempo ballad and compares it with “Not a Bad Thing.”
