On December 6, 2025, Justin Bieber complained that the iPhone’s Messages interface makes it easy to tap a microphone-related control just after sending a text. He said the resulting beep and audio recording interrupt his music, then jokingly threatened Apple employees with a “rear naked choke hold.” The post was an exaggerated reaction to a frustrating interface—not evidence of a planned confrontation.
What Bieber was frustrated about
Bieber’s complaint was about the controls in Apple’s Messages app, rather than a malfunction in the iMessage service itself. iMessage is Apple’s messaging service within Messages; the controls at issue belong to the message-composition interface, which is not limited to blue-bubble conversations.
As Bieber described it, the Send control occupies the same general area as a microphone-related control. A hurried tap after sending can therefore start Dictation or an audio-recording action instead of simply doing nothing. He said the action beeps and interrupts the music he is listening to. His design objection was that Send and microphone functions should not be so easy to confuse. AppleInsider’s report and Complex’s coverage describe the post and the complaint.

The choke-hold line appeared in that context as an apparent joke or hyperbolic expression of irritation. The coverage reviewed did not report a plan, a specific target or an actual confrontation. Nor did it identify a public Apple response.

Why the control can be easy to hit
The composition area changes with the state of the message:
- When the text field is empty, a microphone-related Dictation control may be shown.
- After you enter text, that general area is used for Send.
- After sending or clearing the field, the microphone-related control returns.
That quick change can catch someone who taps again automatically after sending. The exact appearance and placement are not identical on every iPhone: model, iOS version, orientation, keyboard language, accessibility settings and other layout choices can affect what appears on screen. A screenshot showing a control beside particular keys, for example, should not be treated as a universal layout specification. Why music may be interrupted
Dictation and audio recording need microphone input. When an app begins using the microphone, iOS may pause or lower other audio. That offers a plausible explanation for the interruption Bieber described, but it does not mean every music app, iPhone, headset or audio route behaves the same way. A beep or brief interruption by itself also does not prove that an audio message was sent.

It can prevent keyboard Dictation, but it is not a documented way to remove every audio-related feature from Messages. Apple’s iOS 26 instructions give this path:

- Tap General, then Keyboard.
- Turn off Enable Dictation.
Apple documents audio messages separately: in Messages, they can be recorded through Add → Audio. So if an audio-message control remains after Dictation is disabled, that does not necessarily mean the setting failed; it may be a different Messages function. Reports on Bieber’s complaint describe an audio-recording option as a remaining source of accidental activation, but its exact presentation can vary. Turning off Dictation also means giving up a useful hands-free input feature. It is a reasonable trade-off if you never use it, but not a complete fix for someone who still encounters a separate audio-message control.

Practical ways to avoid an accidental recording
- Pause briefly after sending before tapping near the composition controls again. This reduces the chance of hitting a control that has changed state.
- Avoid automatic double-taps in the Send area. Check what the control shows before touching it again.
- Try landscape orientation if it gives you a more comfortable keyboard layout. Apple says landscape can provide a larger keyboard in apps including Messages, but whether it changes the spacing relevant to this issue depends on the device and layout. Apple’s keyboard settings guide covers keyboard adjustments.
- Stop or cancel a recording if you activate an audio-message flow by mistake; do not continue through the recording and sending steps unintentionally.
- Consider another input method if the interaction is a persistent problem. An external keyboard may help with typing, but it does not necessarily change the Messages controls on screen.
These are workarounds, not guaranteed redesigns. The reviewed sources do not identify a setting that removes both Dictation and audio-message controls from the interaction area, or an Apple update specifically changing their placement in response to Bieber’s post. That is not proof that Apple will never alter the design.
The design issue behind the joke
The underlying frustration is straightforward: a control that changes function in the same location immediately after a fast action can invite a mistaken second tap. Disabling Dictation may remove one source of accidental microphone use, but Messages audio features are separate. Bieber’s post made that small interface problem a celebrity story; the practical takeaway is to distinguish the two functions and avoid assuming that turning off Dictation removes every audio control.
